More "Lost in Translation"

This year is unusual in that, with the loss of "Homunculus", it doesn't have any foreign language films. UK and Irish films for sure, but given that "The Visitor" is a foreign-made film with an English speaking cast, there really isn't any subbing or dubbing going on.

When was the last time that happened?

Speaking of translation:

  1.) Go to Google Translate
2.) Type a series of periods
  3.) Select "Japanese"
4.) Play  the "Listen" speaker icon
  5.) Laugh... Cheesy

Quiz answer:

When was the last time there were no foreign language films at the Marathon?

Oddly enough, it wasn't as long ago as one might think.

Counting backwards:

sf-38: Reptillicus (Denmark), WotW Goliath and Battle Royale (Japan)
sf-37: Endhiran the Robot (India), Cowboy Bebop (Japan)
sf-36: Lady Terminator (Indonesia), The Host (South Korea), Mothra (Japan)
sf-35: District 9 (South Africa), Sleep Dealer (Mexico)
sf-34: BINGO!

Marathons without foreign language films:

Sf-34
sf-15? It depends on whether or not "Barbarella" is foreign
sf-14
sf-4
sf-1

Much of this is due to the popularity of Japan's Anime and the "Godzilla" franchise, as well as the mark left on the Marathon by repeated showings of the Italian made "Planet of the Vampires".

Like the Marathon, the Festival frequently features foreign titles that are seldom if ever seen on US screens. Congratulations to Garen and LA for their global outreach.

It's been too long since a sci-fi quiz has been posted, so inspired by a classic soon to be seen and not heard at SF-40:

IF YOU LIVED HERE YOU'D BE DISORIENTED NOW!

...

Believe it or not the buildings pictured below have not been damaged nor have the photos been distorted in any way. They are standing landmarks from around the world.  Keeping in mind the old architectural adage that form follows function, match the buildings to their location and purpose.
