Title: Sci-Fi Quiz
Post by R_F_Fineman on Oct 19th, 2011 at 3:14pm
It's time to getting in mental shape for the nearly impossible trivia contest. You can ask Siri, just not the IMDB.
PM me your answers and I'll PM your scores. Will post all the answers in a week or so if anybody asks.

To that end...

Sci-fi films of the fifties provided an alternative to the dumb blonde roles that prevailed in the musical/comedy films of the era. How well do you know your brainy brunettes of the period? Take the quiz and find out. Match the pictures, films and names of the following:

The Actress
(All played the female lead and have at least 10 film credits.)

1. Mara Corday
2. Dana Wynters
3. Ann Robinson
4. Faith Domergue
5. Joan Taylor
6. Margaret Sheridan
7. Paula Raymond
8. Shirley Patterson
9. Joan Weldon
10. Julie Adams

Starred in:

Q. It Came From Beneath The Sea (55'), This Island Earth (55')

R. Creature From The Black Lagoon (54')

S. War of The Worlds (53', 05')

T. Them (54')

U. The Thing From Another World (51')

V. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (56'), 20 Million Miles To Earth (57')

W. Invasion of The Body Snatchers (56') The Invaders (TV)

X. Tarantula (55'), The Giant Claw (57') and The Black Scorpion(57')

Y. It: The Terror From Beyond Space (58') World Without End (56')

Z. The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (53')

I guess that my nearly impossible quiz has turned out to be entirely impossible! Here's what I hope will be an easier version: Same questions, same answers, only the studio glamour shots of the women have been replaced with shots from one of the films involved.

Here are the answers.
I believe that almost all of the Actresses and most of the movies* appeared at the Marathon at some point. How did everybody do? I'm annually astounded by the number who know all the answers at the Thon'.

*The exception might be Shirley Patterson ("It: The Terror From Beyond Space" and "World Without End" which, I recently found out, actually predates "Forbidden Planet" as a Technicolor wide screen sci-fi.) I'm convinced that "It" was remade as "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver in Shirley's role. There are just too many similarities. If those two titles haven't played they really should!

Thanks for the quiz.

As to which films mentioned played the marathon, MOST did. Two of the films (plus, the INVADERS tv show) have not.

Can you name them?

BINGO!!

Also, I've added an updated filmography of ALL the movies we've shown the past 36 years here: http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1319765286

I was just guessing as to what played before SF15*. I'm surprised that something as famous as "Creature" never played. Now I'm regretting leaving out Barbara Rush ("When Worlds Collide" and "It Came From Outer Space").

I  didn't know that the 05' "War of The Worlds" featured a cameo by Ann Robinson until I did her picture search. Like far too many SF remakes done in the past six years, I thought it best to give the '05 "War" the 'thon test, that is to say if the 'thon runs it -great. If not -it can wait.   ;)

*The link to the list doesn't like me... :(

I'm working on that bug in the system for the filmography. I have a temporary listing here: http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1319772249/0#0

But, no, CREATURE has never shown, although it's second sequel THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US has. Go figure.

I'm starting to see that you're right. The quiz seems harder than I thought. Given that B,E,F,G, I, J and L played at the thon', and that D includes a model submarine made famous in a 60's TV series, and that scene H was reenacted by Tim Burton, I would think that the remainders could be worked out by elimination and a feel for what a 40's movie, and four movies made between 68' and 78' looked like.

Which ones have everybody stumped?

I'm thinking its the one where someone goes berserk, Shatner gets his shirt ripped in a fight with an alien, and then flirts with a scantilly clad woman. ;)

The amazing part is the number of Oscar nominees and winners in column three! Even having worked with Henry Fonda, John Huston, John Wayne, James Mason, Kirk Douglas, Walter Pidgeon, Ray Milland and Marcia Gay Harden couldn't spare the rubber octopus from the dreaded fate of being typecast. ;)

Bela Lugosi (as played by Martin Landau) vs. the Octopus:

Mostly stills from the roles that made them famous. I'll post a list of the names to match in a couple of days in the event that someone really knows their Louises! :)

This famous WWI enlistment poster may have been the inspiration for a whole lot of "original" movie poster art:

Trivia is my area, science fiction films are a passion, poster collecting is a long time hobby and a business.  The quiz was answered in the time that it took me to write the responses.  There was little chance given the nature of the quiz.  I have removed the answers to give others a go.

Just like the "Twenty Horrible Monsters" list on the Youtube thread, the images could have gone on and on, maybe even stumping Frank, (but probably not)! I intentionally left off a host of famous ones like "Creature From The Black Lagoon", "The Wolf Man '41" and "King Kong" as too easy and a handfull of others as too hard. :)

Surprisingly few of these have played the 'Thon, althought a couple have been on the "wish list" for years. Can you name them?

Thanks for keeping us occupied and contented while we wait for the thon.  These quizzes involve time and your efforts to keep us entertained are much appreciated.  The images are cool too!.

The number of 50's, 60's and 70's titles that have NOT played the thon is significant.  I would be surprised if there are many of these available in 35mm although they do pop up from time to time.  I am content to see 2 or 3 over the curse of the 24 hours.

Well, if you manage to rectify the travesty by finding an existing print, youre going to run straight into Frank's fury when it turns out to be as red as a beet!
Honestly, any print of that movie that still exists -- 16 or 35 -- is RED.  The only way around it is to get a new print struck....but then you have to worry about finding the original elements and hoping theyve been stored correctly, because if they werent, theyll have shifted or faded as well.

The DVD would (for me) be a preferred alternative to an all red print but for one major problem.  The DVD projector that gets lugged into the projection room is suitable for the small screen in the video room and not the massive screen in the main room.  The dark and blurry image that we get is not prefrable to a red print.  Remember the penultimate reel to The Quiet Earth.  Dave worked his magic and fit it in to make up for the missing reel.  The dopes sent I believe reels 1,2,3,3, and 5.  Anyway, the section that was projected from the DVD was dark and not at all sharp.  We had a similar occurence with Dark Star.  It simply no way to watch a movie.

Also as I have said there are many shades of red.  I have seen plenty of color prints in 16mm that are very watchable with SOME color loss.

     Nope!
I absolutely guarantee that I ran the first three reels in film (which I spliced together onto a single reel), cued up the DVD to just before the end of the third reel, shut the dowser on the film projector, opened the shutter in the video projector, switched the sound over, & hit "PLAY."  Never switched back.

APE QUIZ: Children's Version

Match the Movie title, picture, and ape character (okay, they're actually actors with opposable thumbs and not apes.)

Movie
1 Konga
2 King Kong '77
3 King Kong '33
4 Nabonga
5 Schlock
6 Beneath The Planet of the Apes
7 The Right Stuff
8 Mighty Joe Young
9 King Kong vs. Godzilla
10 2001: A Space Odyssey
11 The Lost World

A Konga
B King Kong
C Nabonga
D Schlock
E Lucius
F Ham
G Mighty Joe Young
H Probably didn't have one, or given his speaking limitations, wouldn't tell.

How's that for silly? ;)

the name of the HOMONID portrayed in C/2001 a space odyssey is Moonwatcher. he portrays the father of technology and also the father of whup-ass and he deserves better than to be called an ape. his dna is far closer to human dna than to the dna of an ape.

Which of the following helmets pictured here are actual inventions and which are movie props?
Are any both?(An off-the-shelf invention used as a low budget prop)

If they are movie props, from what movie and did it ever play at the marathon? If not, what on earth (or not) is it used for?

Some of the wierdest looking helmets were real inventions while some of the most pratical looking were the product of good art departments, particularly the helmets from "Star Trek" (2010) and "The Abyss", both of which played the 'thon.   Next quiz: Goggles.

Correction: "Invasion of the Saucer Neptune Men"

This sci-fi quiz:

Famous movie CRANKS! knobs or levers!

Can you identify the film, if and when it played the 'thon, and what the crank does?

Next week, I'll post multiple choice categories.

Title: Re: Sci-Fi Quiz
Post by R_F_Fineman on Jun 26th, 2012 at 4:32pm
Here's the multiple choice part of what does that crank do? Can you match the letters with the numbers?
It should make the quiz a whole lot easier to get a handle on.

1.      Puts a silent rocket right in the eye of the moon.
2.      Controls the secret weapon that will doom Planet X
3.      Causes Colin Clive to overact.
4.      Nichts: es is nur ein “prop” en die phantastichen Abenture des Raumschiffes Orion
5.      Allows Raymond Massey to do something, (I’d know if it had played since SF9!)
6.      A high-powered Canadian fly swatter.
7.      Propels the audience into a future filled with George Pal special effects.
8.      Alarm! (translated from the German: “Alarm!”)
9.      Allows “The world’s loudest band” to crank it up!
10.     “Something to do with plate or shrimp or plate of shrimp.”
11.      Helps Sam Neil get better dish reception for television.
12.      Another adrenaline-pumping scene.
13.      Opens the hatch for the original Victorian Steam punks.
14.      Gives Buster Crabbe the inspiration for picture “H”.

B 1 “A Trip to the Moon” (1902)
C 9 “This Is Spinal Tap (1984)” Obviously not sci-fi, didn't play, but cranking it up to 11 is how I roll." -RF
D 10 “Repo Man” (1984)
E 8 “Metropolis” (1927)
F 5 “Things to Come” (1936)
G 7 “The Time Machine” (1960)
H 2 “Duck Dodgers” (1953)
I 3 “Frankenstein” (1931)

N 12 “Crank” (2006) Hasn't played but the title fit.

Wow, 1700 hits: thanks sci-fi fans. :D

Frank is Back!

Frankenstein's Monster is one of the most played or parodied non-human characters in stage or screen. Can you identify the actor and the film/video adaptation? Only a few have played the 'thon.

While the films titles aren't too hard (hint: the word "Frankenstein" is in most of them), some of the actors are quite obscure.
Next week: a much needed multiple choice.

ps. I had planned "Risque` is our business: the women of "Star Trek" The Original Series", but have decided to save it for later in the year when the board traffic picks up. :)

Here are the titles in chronological order:

A      Thomas Edison's Frankenstein (1910)
B      Frankenstein (1931)
C      Ghost of Frankenstein (1944)
D      The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
E      The Munsters (1964 TV)
F      Andy Warhol's Frankenstein (1971)
G      Frankenstein: the True Story (1973)
H      Young Frankenstein (1974)
I      The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
J      Frankenstein Unbound (1990)
K      Frankenstein (1992 TV)
L      Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)
M      Frankenstein (2004 TV)
N      Puzzlehead (2005)
O      National Theater UK's Frankenstein (2012)

Here are the actors who played the role of the monster in alphabetical order:

1      Boris Karloff
2      Charles Ogle
3      Fred Gwynn
4      Johnny Lee Miller
5      Lon Chaney Jr.
6      Luke Goss
7      Michael Sarazzin
8      Nick Brimble
9      Peter Boyle
10      Peter Hinwood
11      Randy Quaid
12      Robert DeNiro
13      Sir Christopher Lee
14      Srdjan Zelenovic
15      Stephen Galaida

When the images are portrayed in this composite form, you can see the different approaches to the monster. Some were only capable of grunting, while others gained the ability to speak, and still others gave us intense monologues. Some were frighteningly grotesque while others were downright sexy. :)

You may say to yourself: "am I right or am I wrong?"

but can you identify these

Talking Heads:

The challenge is to identify the movie and whether or not it played the 'thon -the same as it ever was.

Now that's using your head! F and H are also camp classics that might be added to the body of sci-fi late night screenings.

Quiz too easy? See if you can get your head around these qoutes and match them to the film or TV show.

1. "Is this some kind of a joke!"
2. "Join Us!"
3. "Measure 62? Impossible -we don't have enough Pirranahs."
4. Nothing-not much change of expression either, kind of like Kristen Stewart.
5. "And you, poor creatures, who conjured you out of the clay? Is God in show business, too?"
6. "I can't lie to you about your chances, but … you have my sympathies."
7. "Material things don't interest me. It's living things that fascinate me."
8. "Weeeeesssssssst… Yoooooooouuuuu... Baaaaaastaaaaaaaaaaaard!"
9. "Mach schnell! Mach schnell!"
10. (sings) "I ain't got no-body"
11. "No, my deformed friend, like all quantities, horror has it's ultimate, and I am that."
12. "I think his game is Poker."
13. "Jason Hi, It's me."
14. "Rrrrrr"
15. Doesen't say much; telepathy?

First it was "Brides", then it was "Heads". Now its...

sci-fi classics
REVISITED

Remakes haven't always been a buzzword for unimaginitive rehashes of presold titles as loud action pictures.
Many a good remake has graced the screen of the Marathon over the years.
Can you match the letters of film and their remake?

Which have played the thon?
No multiple choice on this one...it would be too easy!

Title: Re: Sci-Fi Quiz
Post by R_F_Fineman on Sep 20th, 2012 at 5:32pm
Was the remake quiz too easy?

How about this:

Movies that are closer to remakes than many remakes.

Plot line 1: Giant robots, which greatly resemble Transformer toys, smash each other up real good. Oh, and there's a sexy brunette for good measure.

Plot line 2: Five men and two women depart a planet, not knowing a monsterous life form is on board. Said creature picks off the crew members one by one and stores their bodies for future dining. How will they stop it?

Plot line 3: Man cryogenically frozen in contemporary (to the film's relese) times wakes up in a future filled with absurd advanced technology and a Big-brother government. Comedy and a love story ensue.

Can you name the movie pairs? Hint: as in the previous quiz, ALL have played the 'thon!

Good job Kirok! Five out of six ain't bad. The one that stumped you isn't easy. Although It played the thon twice, It hasn't played since before the Coolidge Years (SF-15). Maybe It's due for a return.*

I'll post the answers to both the remake and the "premake" quiz tomorrow. By the way, how am I doing? Are the quizzes to hard, too easy, fun or just plain boring?

i know that one very well. i just can't think of the title. there was a monster on the rocket ship. they started out shooting at him on deck 1. no good, retreat to deck 2, machine gun and a grenade. no good, retreat to deck 3. try multiple hand grenades and a bazooka. still no good, retreat to deck 4. try intense radiation. no good, retreat to deck 5. finally destroy monster by donning spacesuits and depriving him of oxygen. questions: was monster really dead or hibernating? they did not do a lot of tests. is it wise to shoot a bazooka inside a spaceship? after losing all that oxygen can they make it back to earth?

IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE

One of my favorite all time titles. It's on TCM this month. Wouldn't mind seeing it at the Marathon again. Back to back with PROMETHEUS, perhaps? (keeping in the major influence it had on the original ALIEN). Can't believe it's been since SF/13!!!

Wow, given that Kirok knocked the first line out quickly, I figured that I didn't need to add the multiple chioce. I sometimes forget how good this crowd is at identifying movies. Still, normal, mortal humans are more than welcome at this board and for their benefit I add the promised multiple choice.

The mid-1960's were a fashion era like no other. Even when designing for a futuristic or fantasy role, costume designers are influenced by the current popular trends.

If you can identify the episode and/or the character in these "Star Trek" stills it would be groovy baby!  ;)

Next week:multiple choice.

As they say in Latin: "Approximo Non Corona": Close but no Cigar!
- X (except for Charlie X) wrong episode. You have "Cloud Minders" twice, but the sitting figure at the right (E) should make the answer a no-brainer.
- X While it does take place in a paradise setting, the actual title is shared with an infamous musical that played the 'thon a few years back.
- Y Yep, you know the stories but the actual titles are something else. (While "Lord Garth" may actually be a better title than the real one, this can't be said for "Spock Gets Blinded".)
- Z The last frame, which was the last frame in the first season closing credits, actually appears in two episodes on the list. One aired in the 60's and one didn't. I'm being cagy on this one. ;)

The Usual Suspects

One of the great things about the marathon is seeing a crowd of great people, but like any crowd there are a few sketchy individuals.

Can you make a positive ID on these actors in sci-fi films from their police mugshots? Can you match them with the films they played in? As ususal, some of these suspects have been sighted at the Marathon over the years. Which ones? ;)

V Robert Downey Jr Iron Man

(Note: "The Man Who Fell to Earth", "Avatar" and "Iron Man" have been discussed as good 'thon fits. I've seen "The Arrival" and think it too would be a good fit and help rehabilitate Charlie Sheen. Although based on a sea-monster story by "Jaws" author Peter Benchley, "The Deep" is most remembered for Jacqueline Bissett's introduction of the Tankini.)-RF

A recent major meteor sighting* caused me to wonder "How many movies have we seen that start with a strange object entering earth's atmosphere?" A lot it turns out! Can you identify the film and Marathon appearance?
Next week, I'll post the multiple choice with a surprise.

Hints:

Not only are the actors and actresses named Hurt, Payne, and Burns, their characters also went through agonizing situations.

Among them:
-Having an Alien pop out of their stomach.
-Given the choice of burning to death or sawing off your own hand
-Morphing into a bizarre inhuman blob
-Being eaten by Pirranahs at a water park
-Being the female lead in "Nightfall"

Next Week's Quiz:
I'm considering the next quiz to be like the board game "Clue". With answers like:

"-Mr. X killed -Dr. Y in -Japan with a -Forklift.

It would naturally have a lot of spoilers, fewer if the movie name were left out. I could put the quiz in the "spoiler only section" and confine my films to older classics that have played the 'thon. Any thoughts? I won't post the quiz until I get some feedback from board members.

It's been too long since I posted a quiz.

Hair Today...

The following pictures are actual runway and fashion shots from 2012 and 2013.
They reminded me of hairstyles in some famous and infamous science fiction films. Which one(s)? Can you make the cut?

As usual, most of the films have played the 'thon. There are a couple of answers from the original "Star Trek" series thrown in and at least one has more than one good answer. I'll post multiple choice answers in a couple of days so you won't be pulling your hair out. :)

I figured it was a hare-brained quiz, especially with the movies listed. Would posting the movie stills help out?

Kirok:
I take it by "K" you meant "L" and check the multiple choices 4 posts back. I left Persis Khambatta off the multiple choices in favor of an actress who played the 'thon very recently and to her credit never acted in Star Trek I. She did, however play in Star Wars I. (Kirok: As a Star Trek fan you should also look more closely at "J")

I can't believe you guys haven't picked up on "A" "C", "E" and "F".  They're not exactly everyday hairstyles. "A" and "C" have played the 'thon multiple times, "E" played the 'thon very recently and was even featured in a brief stage performance. :o

More "Lost in Translation"

This year is unusual in that, with the loss of "Homunculus", it doesn't have any foreign language films. UK and Irish films for sure, but given that "The Visitor" is a foreign-made film with an English speaking cast, there really isn't any subbing or dubbing going on.

When was the last time that happened?

Speaking of translation:

  1.) Go to Google Translate
2.) Type a series of periods
  3.) Select "Japanese"
4.) Play  the "Listen" speaker icon
  5.) Laugh... :D

Quiz answer:

When was the last time there were no foreign language films at the Marathon?

Oddly enough, it wasn't as long ago as one might think.

Counting backwards:

sf-38: Reptillicus (Denmark), WotW Goliath and Battle Royale (Japan)
sf-37: Endhiran the Robot (India), Cowboy Bebop (Japan)
sf-36: Lady Terminator (Indonesia), The Host (South Korea), Mothra (Japan)
sf-35: District 9 (South Africa), Sleep Dealer (Mexico)
sf-34: BINGO!

Marathons without foreign language films:

Sf-34
sf-15? It depends on whether or not "Barbarella" is foreign
sf-14
sf-4
sf-1

Much of this is due to the popularity of Japan's Anime and the "Godzilla" franchise, as well as the mark left on the Marathon by repeated showings of the Italian made "Planet of the Vampires".

Like the Marathon, the Festival frequently features foreign titles that are seldom if ever seen on US screens. Congratulations to Garen and LA for their global outreach.

It's been too long since a sci-fi quiz has been posted, so inspired by a classic soon to be seen and not heard at SF-40:

IF YOU LIVED HERE YOU'D BE DISORIENTED NOW!

Believe it or not the buildings pictured below have not been damaged nor have the photos been distorted in any way. They are standing landmarks from around the world.  Keeping in mind the old architectural adage that form follows function, match the buildings to their location and purpose.
