MARATHON Feature Films:

Wink

...

FIRST MEN IN THE MOON
(1964) Dir. Nathan Juran. 103 mins. In honor of Ray Harryhausen, this entertaining retro-future adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel makes its 3rd appearance at the Marathon (SF/3, SF/19). Edward Judd and Martha Hyer star along with one the quintissential oddball scientist performances in the genre by Lionel Jeffries. Peter Finch has a cameo early in the film. Screenplay by Jan Read and Quatermass scribe Nigel Kneale. Music by Laurie Johnson. 35MM Print!

...

WESTWORLD
(1973). Dir. Michael Crichton. 88 mins. Yul Brenner stars in this robot amusement park gone wrong tale which makes its LONG overdue debut at the Marathon. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin star as the guests who just came for some Western fun, but, it gets more real than they expected. 35MM Print!

COHERENCE
(2014). 89 mins. Director James Ward Byrkit. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2866360/combined  Festival favorite about a group of friends awaiting a comet. Official Website: http://coherencethemovie.com/

THE POWER
(1968) Dir. Byron Haskin. 108 mins. Producer George Pal's thriller about telekenisis stars George Hamilton, Suzanne Pleshette and Richard Carlson plus a number of familiar faces. Score by the great Miklos Rozsa.

...

EUROPA REPORT
(2013). Dir. Sebastián Cordero. 90 mins. Smart well-done modest budget film which fell a bit under the radar. This 'found footage' epic is a sort of spiritual sequel to the work of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 & 2010. Cast includes DISTRICT 9's Sharlito Copley, Embeth Davidtz and Karolina Wydra. Screenwriter Philip Gellat will appear for a Q&A after the film! Official Site & Trailer: http://www.magnetreleasing.com/europareport/

...

SILENT RUNNING
(1972). Dir. Douglas Trumbull. 89 mins. Recently minted Oscar nominee Bruce Dern heads a small cast punctuated by some loveable drones in this environmental tale. Douglas Trumbull (2001, BRAINSTORM) directs and provides some beautiful pre-CGI effects. Renowned classical composer Peter Schickele did the music and Joan Baez contribues two original songs. Not shown at the Marathon since SF/4 in 1979!

...
THE TRUMAN SHOW
(1998) Dir. Peter Weir. 103 mins. As the years pass, Weir and writer Andrew Niccol's (GATTACA) tale has taken on a more and more prescient tone. It puts to shame most found-footage films (which way too often 'cheat' on camera angles), let alone so-called 'Reality TV' programs which are anything but real. Jim Carrey, Laura Linney and Ed Harris star. Weir, Niccol and Harris were each nominated for an Oscar and the film won 3 Golden Globes (Carrey, Harris and the score by Burkhard von Dallwitz and Philip Glass - who has a bit part in the film). 35MM Print! Trailer:

...

...

ELECTRIC DREAMS
(1984). Dir. Steve Barron. 95 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087197/combined Long before HER came this 'computer romance' with Bud Cort as the voice of Edgar. Virginia Madsen and Lenny Von Dohlen also star. Music by Giorgio Moroder, he of Donna Summer and Daft Punk electronic music fame. 35MM Print!

...

THE VISITOR
(1979). 108 mins. Dir: Giulio Paradisi. This crazy Italian film has rapidly, if belatedly, become a cult fave with a cast including John Huston, Sam Peckinpah, Shelley Winters, Mel Ferrer, Glenn Ford & Lance Henriksen! Be prepared to be amazed as you haven't since THE APPLE!

Website and Trailer: http://drafthousefilms.com/film/the-visitor

...

THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL
(1959). Dir. Ranald MacDougall       95 mins. Apocalyptic post-nuke tale makes its marathon debut. Features the great Harry Belafonte along with Mel Ferrer and Inger Stevens. Music by Miklos Rosza.

...

GRABBERS
(2012). Dir.Jon Wright. 94 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1525366/combined A festival hit, this Irish comedy is in the vein of TREMORS. Stars Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley and David Pearse. Official website with Trailer: http://grabbers.ie/

CHILDREN OF MEN
(2006) Dir. Alfonso Cuaron. 109 mins. GRAVITY is wowing audiences this year, but, many feel that Cuaron's CHILDREN is an even greater futuristic achievement. Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine head the cast. Oscar nominations for Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography (note the amazing single shot car sequence) Trailer:

...

FLASH GORDON
(1980): Dir.Mike Hodges. 111 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080745/combined Fun update on the classic serial features Sam Jones and Melody Anderson as Flash & Dale, plus Max Von Sydow and Ornella Muti as the villains. Music by Queen and Howard Blake. First Marathon appearance since SF/9 although the trailer has been a hit ever since. Go Flash Go!
