Oh, this really needs to be commemorated in some way this year.

The man who brought the world Lemonheads and Atomic Fire Balls routinely serenaded the restaurants where he dined and held mandatory family dinners every Sunday, said his son, Salvatore Ferrara.

Nello Ferrara died Friday at his home in the Chicago suburb of River Forest surrounded by his family. He was 93.

In his honor, Mrs. F and I plan on playing a little Jerry Lee Lewis number, and Frank, maybe a somber black armband around the Atomic Fireball jar would be appropriate. He also invented "Lemonheads" which went on to musical fame:

the packaging of the individual fireball is often airtight and when pressured between thumb and index finger it will produce an audible pop. if it could be organized i'd like to give him a moment of silence and a 21 pop salute.

It's a shame about Nello.

An interesting story from his son:

"Which, if you ever met me, you'll know my head is not in the shape of a lemon. He claims that the first thing he said when he saw me was, 'Oh my God, I have a lemonhead for a son.' "
