Films announced for the SF/38 Marathon - February 17-18, 2013:

NOTE: FILM ARE LISTED IN THE ORDER THEY Were SHOWN at the Marathon!

JOHN CARTER (2012) 132 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/ - One of the year's most controversial films, this Disney production ran into problems even before released when it dropped the "From Mars" from it's title because other Red Planet films had bombed. The reception was mixed, but found some strong support. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic 'Princess of Mars' and stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton & Willem Defoe. Directed by animation specialist Andrew Stanton (TOY STORY).

REPTILICUS (1961) 82 mins (U.S. version) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056405/ The greatest giant monster movie from Denmark. Beautiful archive print (will check on running time). This Sid Pink production (ANGRY RED PLANET) features Bent Mejding, Asbjorn Anderson, Ann Smyrner and some of the most cut-rate euro Special effects you've seen. Have fun with it.

THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X (2012) 106 min. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1754633/combined Black & White (actually shot on Film) comedic hommage to the B movies of the 50s. Now, with songs and juvenile delinquents. Features Kevin McCarthy's last screen appearance. Directed by Paul Bunnell who, surprise, has acted in not one, but, two Larry Blamire hommages.

WAR OF THE WORLDS: GOLIATH (2012) 85 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2320924/combined Joe Pearson's animated movie features the voice talents of Beau Billingsley and former Miss America Elizabeth Ward Gracen.

BATTLE ROYALE (2000). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/ 114 mins. Director Kinji Fukasaku's (GREEN SLIME) notorious Japanese film about a futuristic government contest that pits teens versus teens in a battle to the death. Hmmm. Sounds vaguely HUNGER-ish, no? Stars Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano.

SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) 86 mins - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1862079/ Colin Treverrow's Sundance fest hit became one an Indie success with critics and audiences this summer. Features Parks & Recreations' Aubrey Plaza and Mumblecore hero Mark Duplass in a sorta Time Travel movie and Sorta Rom-Com sorta quirky SF film.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050539/ 81 mins. As incredible as the film is, it's almost insane that it hasn't shown at the Marathon since SF/4 - some 30+ years ago! Director Jack Arnold's classic take on Richard Matheson's novel (he adapted the screenplay himself) stars Grant Williams, Randy Stuart, an ominous Spider and a killer cat. Very nice 50s Sfx by Clifford Stein and crew. 35mm print! DO NOT GO ON YOUR 'DINNER BREAK' for this one!!

PHASE IV (1974) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070531/ 84 mins. (orig.cut). Director Saul Bass semi-surreal thriller about sentient ants hasn't been shown since SF/9 in 1984. This is an archive 35mm print which hopefully is the same one with the alternate ending (check back for details) that was just discovered this past year. Bass is known as one of the greatest opening title designers in film history with several Bond, Hitchcock and many other credits. Stars Michael Murphy, Nigel Davenport and Lynn Frederick.

MOTIVATIONAL GROWTH (2013) 105 mins

V FOR VENDETTA (2005) 132 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/?ref_=sr_1 THE MATRIX's Wachowski siblings produced this stirring dystopian action thriller that brought the Guy Fawkes mask back into popular culture (the current face of the internets group known as Anonymous). Feautures Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving and John Hurt. Directed by James McTeigue.

ESCAPE FROM L.A. (1996) 101 mins. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116225/- John Carpenter's sequel to his ESCAPE FROM N.Y. (which surprisingly has NEVER shown at the 'thon) is a fast paced sequel that returns Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken to the screen along with a lot of familiar faces such as Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Stacy Keach, Pam Grier, Bruce Campbell and more. Archive 35mm print.

THE FIFTH ELEMENT (1997). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119116/ 126 mins. 35mm. Luc Besson's visually stunning film features Milla Jovovich, Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman and the tres annoying Chris Tucker. Academy Awards Nominee for Best Sound Effects Editing. Winner of 3 Cesar Awards (French Oscar).

DEATH OF A SHADOW (Short) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2312702/?ref_=sr_1 20 min. Oscar nominated short!
