     A BRIEF HISTORY OVERVIEW

The Boston Science Fiction Film Marathon has been held in and around the Boston, Massachusetts area on President’s Day Weekend (Sunday Noon to Monday Noon) since 1976. This Marathon History is necessarily incomplete (and YOUR contributions are respectfully requested).
** Frank Urbano was the first to publish a Marathon Filmography online. Great thanx to Bruce Bartoo, Frank, Harry Lohr, The Sargents, NASA Man & Sci-Fi Girl, Major Tom, Mark Diamond,  J.D.Pollack, Justin Freed,  Larry Jackson, Garen Daly and all those who have contributed to the Marathon and the Filmography over the years. – Anthony Di Salvo (The L.A. Connection).

NOTE: This list is a guide. We still need YOUR input, corrections and additions! Anywhere you see a ? (“question mark”) is a place where we need your recollection. You may email your adds and corrections to  Webguy: Dave OR LA-Connection: Tony  on the CONTACT LIST page. OR, just put them on this board. ALSO, still looking for any “Paper” from SF/1, SF/2 or SF/3 (programs, schedules etc.). Thank you!

** MOVIES THAT HAVE PLAYED AT THE MARATHON (as of SF/49, 2024):

Historical Notes:

1)      Marathons 1 thru 11 were held at the ORSON WELLES CINEMAS, Cambridge.  Marathons 12 thru 14  were held at the SOMERVILLE THEATER, W.Somerville Marathons 15 thru 28 were held at the COOLIDGE CORNER CINEMA, Brookline.
2)      ** SF/29 was held at the Dedham Community Theater, Dedham, MA. SF/30 was held at the SOMERVILLE THEATER. SF/30 also had Friday Night and Sunday Night special events. (see note below). SF/31 was held at the West Newton Cinema. SF/32 through SF/45 were held back at the SOMERVILLE THEATER. Because of the pandemic, SF/46 was a virtual event. The Somerville Theater is scheduled to host SF/50 in 2025.
3)       * All Marathons have been held the Sunday and Monday of President’s Day (formerly Washington’s Birthday Weekend). SF/30 was held Saturday & Sunday of that weekend in 2005.
4)      ** The Orson Welles Marathon was nicknamed, IT CAME FROM THE ORSON WELLES! Right from the very first year (but was also denoted by the “SF/4, SF/6 etc”. Upon the Orson Welles’ destruction in 1986, the Marathon moved to the Somerville Theater and was nicknamed, “IT CAME FROM THE ORSON WELLES AND INVADED THE SOMERVILLE” and later “IT CAME FROM THE SOMERVILLE THEATER”. After SF/13,  the “It Came” moniker seemed to drop away.
5)      * SF/10 was 36 Hours In Length! All other Marathons were “only” 24 Hours long (give or take a half hour or so). SF/25 was 25 Hours as was SF/30 e.g. The official times are noon to noon. SF/10 began at Midnight. SF/40 began at 4pm in order to give attendees more time to arrive.
6)      At SF/1 thru SF/11  at the Orson Welles there was a “NIGHT FLIGHT” which went from Midnight to Noon (Sun/Mon), showing approximately ½ of the full schedule. The first three were added on the day of the show due to sellouts. SF/4 was the first to have it formally scheduled as part of the program. The tradition continued at SF/17,SF/18,SF/22 and   ??
7)      ** After SF/1 & SF/2 there was a “survivor’s breakfast” & toast to all those who made it through the full 24 hour program at the Orson Welles. (10 out of 14 films minimum!). A champagne toast stamp card was included in the SF/10 Flight Pack  (thank you, Metaluna).
8)      AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS was shown at SF/18 with live music by the ALLOY ORCHESTRA. R.I.P. CALEB SAMPSON.

9)      ATOMIC SUBMARINE (Booked for SF/17 – print was MIA)

10)      DAY MARS INVADED EARTH (SF/11 – Screening began, before the MLO seized control of theater, halting the showing. Help us all!)
11)      DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS (Scheduled for SF/20. Print ended up in South America! Venezuala or Peru, perhaps. Hope they liked it!) It was replaced by LOBSTER MAN FROM MARS
12)      FANTASTIC PLANET (Scheduled for SF/23. Distributor sent FANTASTIC VOYAGE instead)
13)      THE FLY (Remake (1986) was also set for SF/19. Original version was delivered and SHOWN)
14)      LIGHT YEARS TRILOGY (Scheduled for SF/27. Print sent was the French Animated LIGHT YEARS. THE IMPOSTOR was a feature begun as a segment from this TRILOGY.)
15)      LILO & STITCH (Booked for SF/28. Disney Cancelled at Last Minute)
16)      LOST WORLD (1926) Shown SF/8.Accompanied by Chris Noyes on Synthesizer. A restored print was shown at SF/27 Accompanied by Yakov Gubanove on piano.
17)      METROPOLIS (1926) Shown SF/20. Accompanied by Chris Noyes Synthesizer.
18)      BILL LEE (Boston Red Sox Pitcher – “The Spaceman”) was scheduled to telephone SF/4 – But, in keeping with his public image - he flaked out! (thanx to Bruce Bartoo on this one). I saw Bill Lee as part of the “Distinguished Speaker Series” at Boston University. He showed up in torn jeans, a T-Shirt and sipping a beer!
19)      MICHAEL CASSUTT (writer MAX HEADROOM, FARSCAPE) spoke at SF/13
20)      * MIKE JITTLOV (director WIZARD OF SPEED & TIME) spoke at SF/15
21)      STUART GORDON (director RE-ANIMATOR) spoke at SF/16
22)      W.D.RICHTER (director BUCKAROO BANZAI) spoke at SF/18
23)      ** JULIE CORMAN (Producer CARNOSAUR, NIGHTFALL) spoke at SF/19
24)      JOE ROMANO (Director NIAGRAVATION) braved the crowd at SF/21
25)      JAMES COLEMAN played the Theremin at SF/21
26)      SUZANNE BERGER (Producer) & PAUL JONES (Make-Up SfX) (TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN) spoke after their film at SF/25.
27)      SPACED INVADERS (Scheduled for SF/25 – Print was MIA)
28)      THEY CAME FROM WITHIN (SF/3 – only shown in Cinema 1 due to audience reception! NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (real family stuff!) was the replacement in Cinema 2).
29)      .27TH DAY (scheduled for SF/24. Studio actually sent the NEGATIVE! DARK STAR was projected via grainy videotape Projection).
30)      THUNDERBIRD SIX (Booked for SF/14. Distributor sent THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO! Resulting in back-to-back years showing same film. Not good.)
31)       TIME MACHINE (SF/16 ) scheduled, but did not arrive. Audience voted between I,MONSTER & MAD MAX – selecting MAD MAX.
32)      NOT OF THIS EARTH – SF/22 scheduled the 1957 Original, but due to a mix-up (or theft!) we got the Traci Lords version instead. The men seemed to like that !
33)      RODAN was scheduled for SF/19, but not shown.
34)      ASTROSLUT, a rock band, performed at SF/25
35)      VOCOMOTIVE/SERIOUS FUN, an a cappella group(s), performed at SF/20,SF/21,SF/22,SF/23/SF/24 (thanx Bodie)  and  ?
36)      THE BORG (a live performance act) was at SF/20
37)      *  MISS FIRECRACKER (Carrie D’Amour), An Ecdysiast (look it up!), performed her stage act at SF/28 with her ‘robot friends’. For more Beauty and the Robot antics, I suggest you rent the unrated version of SEX KITTENS GO TO COLLEGE with Tuesday Weld and Mamie Van Doren. (Thanx Carrie)
38)       Director Greg Pak (ROBOT STORIES) did a Q&A at SF/29
39)       ** There seems to be no full agreement on the birth of the event. Some trace it back to the Orson Welles Cinemas tradition of holding Late Night screenings of Cult movies during finals week at Harvard. Others, such as Larry Jackson, recall it emerged whole as a way of filling a weekend during the slow winter months.
40)      * Director Christopher Coppola (CREATURE FROM THE SUNNYSIDE UP TRAILER PARK) spoke at a Friday Night Opening screening AND attended the full Marathon at SF/30.
41)      * Director Rex Dean (The Adventures of SPACE BABY & MENTAL MAN &  The INTERPRETATOR) spoke at a Sunday Night Closing screening at SF/30.
42)       ** Producer-Director George Pal phoned the Marathon at SF/2 to speak to the audience according to some of our longest term Marathoners.
43)      ** At SF/2, clips were shown for some obscure film to be called “STAR WARS”. Metallic/Mylar promo posters were given out. Also, Bakshi’s WIZARDS was previewed (then titled, “WAR WIZARDS”).
44) Director Sloan U'Ren and Producer Ant Neely (in a kilt) were presented with the Gort Award and spoke of their film DIMENSIONS at SF/37
45) Fritz Lang's WOMAN IN THE MOON was originally announced for the SF/38 line-up but cancelled due to length. The silent HANDS OF ORLAC was announced as its replacement. On the day of the show, a festival film, MOTIVATIONAL GROWTH  bumped HANDS OF ORLAC on the schedule (Director Don Thacker attended and helped with the Alien Mating Cry Contest). It did not go well.
46) RAGNAROK was originally scheduled to be shown as part of SF/40. With weather considerations in mind (and other complications), it was dropped from the final lineup (although shown as a Pre-show in the microcinema to a few folks).
47) BOY 7 was briefly mentioned a few days earlier during the Boston Sci-Fi Festival as a potential SF/40 Marathon entry. It was bumped for FANTASTICHERIE di un passeggiatore solitario.
48) Special Effects legend Douglas Trumbull introduced and then took questions afterwards at SF/40 for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
49) Writer Harlan Ellison gave a taped Happy Birthday wish to the Marathon on its 40th Anniversary at SF/40. The greeting was graciously shot and directed by Nat Segaloff.
50) Garen Daly, Bruce Bartoo and Larry Jackson had a brief symposium on the origins of the Marathon at SF/40
