About to see alien romulus.i can't resist late summer sci Fi

the gestation period of the alien creature has gone from 1 day to about 10 minutes. this was necessary alteration because the spacecraft that was the setting for this movie was in orbit around a planet that has rings. the spacecraft had drifted to the planet because it's entire crew was killed (by guess who). in order to get into an orbit it had to auto-navigate. if it can auto-navigate then why on earth can't it auto navigate  to avoid collision with planetary rings.
