Joanna Russ and Judith Merrill each died at the age of 74, in different years.
If you had to talk about people who expanded the field of SF beyond adventure and technology, these are two of three you would pick. Merrill as a writer and more importantly the main anthologist of fiction written in the 60s-70s. Russ brought a human/feminist sensibility to a mostly adventure/technology field.
