Are you tired of the cliche`-filled movie about a group of attrctive young people jumping into a van for a weekend getaway at a sinister secluded cabin? So, it seems, is Josh Wheddon. In his "Cabin in the Woods" Wheddon and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield)  take us for a thrill-ride alternately paying homages to good fims of this overmade genre and skewering bad ones!

Generally thrilling, sometimes funny, and often downright sarcastic, all while being scary at the same time; the film takes the five fresh faces into a critique of the gratuitous voyerism, autopsy grade gore, and tepid morality of blockbuster slasher films.

What if you liked "Evil Dead" . So do they, it seems. You thought the "Friday the 13th" films were formulaic schlock that didn't desereve a single remake. They're with you on that. Plot twists galore*, and examinations of characters and their actions from a new angle are what really make this film tick.

It would be a shame if only fifteen year old slasher-porn fanboys went to see "Cabin" as it was meant to be taken much more serioiusly, particularly by those responsible for unimaginitive horror films.

"Cabin" is also visually rich, so look for visual references in the set design and on computer screens as well as a surprise appearance by an A-list sci-fi veteran that is much more than a cameo.

*Beware of reviews, promotional articles and even the complete cast list that are apt to spoil the plot twists. Shocked

Would it be too much of a spoiler to say this might fit in well at SF38?

Loved the film too.

I can't complain but sometimes I still do. Life's been good to me so far.

Cabin in the Woods kicks all the ass.
I would be thrilled to sit through it again at the Marathon. Perfect fit.

Dinner break? What's a dinner break?

Awesome movie.  It's the best time that I have had at the movies in some time.

I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content or the peace of unburied death.

I too would love to see "Cabin in the Woods" at the Marathon. Even though I am generally against seeing a film in February that I'd seen the previous year in general release, this film is an exception!

The chief reason I'd be happy to see it again so soon is that the film was packed with blink-and-you'll-miss-them homages to great horror films. Mrs. F and I compared notes after seeing it and know that if we saw thirty of them we didn't see half. "Did you see Stanley Kubrick's creepy twins?" "Did you see Sam Rami's moose head?" "Did you see John Landis' American Werewolf?"...

--minor spoiler--

As the movie builds, so do the visual homages. One of the later scenes could have had Caleb's entire mask collection on the screen! Cheesy

I'm usually one that falls in more with the "Critics" than "General Audiences", but, here, I'm all with the plebeians. CABIN has gotten extremely good reviews from mainstream critics and the fanboy press. But, it should be noted that the film's Cinemascore got only a "C" from regular filmgoers on opening night, and a rotten "D+" from women in general. This despite there being a lot of fanboys in attendence who usually give just about any mediocre genre item a "B" at least.
I won't go into any spoilers, but my biggest problem here was the set-up. It was just so hurriedly introduced, not to mention poorly and inelegantly, that the movie lost me almost from the get go. All suspense is sapped and all the LOOK AT ME AND MY OH SO CLEVER META MUSINGS!! fell on my deaf ears. I just gave up and wished for the killings to get over with.
I will grant that there are a few interesting baubles and bits along the way, but this is a major major disappointment. And, the audience I saw it with was pretty much dead quiet with more than a few "Huhs??!!" and "WTF!!" - and, NOT in a good way.
Any Marathon showing is clearly Break/Dinner/Nap-time depending on one's preference for such.

P.S. Mild Spoiler ++++++++++++

Interesting that there are more than a few parallels with THE HUNGER GAMES!!

I might need to steal that for a blog title.

I have a hard time believing we watched the same film.
The (sizable) crowd I saw it with "got it" and seemed to be having a good time from beginning to end.

Maybe, we should start a SPOILER ONLY sub-thread so that we can clearly discuss CABIN's minuses, flaws & faults without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it yet.

But, equating me with David C is a low blow. I'm discerning, not just cantankerous!  Smiley

I was thinking more of a Dan myself.  Also if we are going to have a thread to discuss its' minuses, flaws and faults you will be on your own or close to it I fear.  So start that thread.....
