This page is a read only information page. To discuss the 2017 SF/42 lineup go here:

LINEUP note: Previously announced MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, SSSSSSSS and KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS have been dropped.

MARATHON LINEUP:
In Lineup order (note, Predator was originally scheduled after Neither Heaven Nor Earth, but because of a distributor error, it had to be flipped.

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY
(2005). 109 mins. 35mm film print. Director Garth Jennings (he of the current popular animated feature SING) helmed this underrated version of Douglas Adams' popular book (which had previously been adapted for radio and TV). Adams was the co-writer and the cast is led by Martin Freeman, Zooey Deschanel, Sam Rockwell and Yasiin Bey. Great supporting bits by Helen Mirren, Warwick Davis, Bill Nighy, John Malkovich and more. Why is it showing this year? What is the perfect number everybody.........?

GALAXY QUEST
(1999). 102 mins. 35mm film print. Director Dean Parisot. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell and the late great Alan Rickman star in this loving, but cheeky take-off on a Star Trek type TV show's cast who end up living one of their screen adventures for real. Lots of great in-jokes aimed straight for an audience like ourselves. Previously shown at SF/26 in 2001.

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
(1954) 79 mins. Director Jack Arnold.  Universal genre classic makes it's long awaited debut at the 'thon! (trivia note: the 3rd in the series, CREATURE WALKS AMONG US, was shown at SF/2). One of the best loved monster movies of the 50s features Stuntmen Ricou Browning (sea) & Ben Chapman (land) as the title being. Richard Carlson and Julie Adams star with recognizable character actors such as Richard Denning, Nestor Paiva & Whit Bissell.

GATTACA
(1997). 106 mins. Writer-Director Andrew Niccol's (he also wrote the great TRUMAN SHOW) superb futuristic take on eugenics stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law and a stout supporting cast including Ernest Borgnine, Alan Arkin, Xander Berkely, Gore Vidal and Tony Shaloub. The sublime score is by Michael Nyman. Academy Award nominated for its simple but elegant Art Direction. GATTACA makes it's second 'thon appearance (SF/23).

MAD MAX FURY ROAD
(2015). 120 mins. Special Edition. Winner of 6 Oscars. One of the most successful films of '15 and the third in the Mad Max series to be shown at the 'thon (the original was shown just a few months after having came and went without much notice - the marathon crowd DID notice). Director George Miller has souped up the action this time around (although still using practical stunts over CGI most of the time), and introduced a new character (Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron) and a new Max (Tom Hardy). The plot isn't much: Some beaten up dude meets an Amazon who is leading her truckload of Playboy Bunnies away from an evil warlord. Repeat for 120 (admittedly thrilling) minutes. Get your seatbelts ready!

BRAZIL
(1985). 132 mins. Director Terry Gilliam's dystopian classic makes its third Marathon appearance (SF/13, SF/25). Oscar nominated for it's sardonic screenplay and it's brilliant Production Design (somehow losing to a bunch of open fields in OUT OF AFRICA!). Jonathan Pryce, Robert DeNiro, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin and a who's who of (largely) British supporting actors star.

TIMECRIMES
(2008) 92 mins. Director Nacho Vigalondo's clever time travel thriller about a man who accidently gets caught up in a mystery. In Spanish with English subtitles. Vigalondo was nominated for an Oscar for a short subject. Rumors are that an American remake is on the way.

JOHN DIES AT THE END
(2015) 99 mins.  Cult director Don Coscarelli's cracked comedic inter-dimensional flick features Paul Giamatti, Rob Mayes, Chase Williamson and PHANTASM's Angus Scrimm.

NEITHER HEAVEN NOR EARTH
(2016) 100 mins. This French mystery thriller from Director Clement Cogitore features soldiers in Afghanistan who mysteriously vanish. It was nominated for four awards at the Cannes Film Festival, winning one. Subtitled.

This Giant Paper Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy
(2016). 112 mins. SF41 Festival winner for Best Comedy. Director Christian Nicolson also co-stars with Daniel Pujol. Three young men find themselves trapped in an alternate dimension where they are in a low budget sci-fi movie. From New Zealand. Galaxy Quest Down Under?

PREDATOR
(1987). 107 mins. One of the biggest monster movies of the 80s makes its long awaited Marathon debut. Future Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura star alongside Carl Weathers (why haven't you run yet, Carl?). Director John McTiernan also helmed the 80s action classic DIE HARD. The Oscar nominated Special effects are by Stan Winston.

THE ROCKETEER
(1991). 108 mins. Director Joe Johnston.  Director Johnston's tribute to the popular Dave Stevens graphic novel features Billy Cambell as the title character and Jennifer Connelly as Jenny (her image patterned after Betty Page). Our hero dons a jetpack (hey, weren't we supposed to be all using these by now?!) and becomes a masked superhero. Supporting players include Alan Arkin, Paul Sorvino and Timothy Dalton. Despite it's mixed reception at the time (it was nominated for a Hugo), it has become a cult film over the past 25 years. It makes it's Marathon debut. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102803/combined

TREMORS
(1990). 96 mins. The surpsise hit of SF/16 in 1991 makes its belated return. Director Ron Underwood's hugely entertaining creature feature is the kind of old fashioned fun B movie that so rarely gets it this right. Fred Ward, Reba McEntyre and Kevin Bacon have a ball battling the critters. It barely made a ripple at the box office but became a VHS hit spawning four sequels (with a fifth one on its way) and TV series.

PLUS!

DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24 1/2 CENTURY (1953) short in 35mm!

WIZARD OF SPEED AND TIME (1979 short) - Scheduled, but was dropped due to time constraints
