One of the best science fiction films of the year is playing midnights at the Coolidge this weekend (and also on-demand for those of us who can't make it for one reason or another).  SPRING is mostly described in terms of horror, but its main character would reject that; she doesn't believe in the supernatural even if that's the only way her life makes sense.  It's a love story between a young man who takes a trip to Italy and decides to stay and a local woman who has a secret, and while that part is always a delight to watch, it gets even better when the strange creature effects start.  This is the second film from the team involved (they also did the very clever footage-finding horror RESOLUTION), and it's built meticulously without ever feeling like a puzzle.

My review on EFC.

Also worth noting among movies that were on the festival circuit at the same time:  The fantastic IT FOLLOWS opens wider this weekend, including at the Somerville Theatre, while, alas, it appears that there will be no local booking for ZOMBEAVERS, so you'll have to settle for that on-demand.  A shame, because that movie is exactly what you'd want from something with that title, only better.
