When Roger Ebert passed away earlier this year, it signaled the end of an era when film critics could popularize the cinema using TV and the internet.

Now, STANLEY KAUFFMANN of the New Republic has passed on at the ripe old age of 97 (he published reviews as recently as August!). Kauffmann wasn't the popularizer that Siskel & Ebert were, but, his intelligent writing brought gravitas to field, which in turn, helped give weight to the cinema itself.

I urge folks interested in serious cinema to seek out his collections of film reviews: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_13?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-...
