Space Moby Dick: The Movie is actually happening

Meredith Woerner

Call me Spaceman Ishmael! The next movie from We Need to Talk About Kevin scribes Lynne Ramsay and Rory Kinnear just got backed by Scott Pictures. Which means, we're one big step closer to seeing Captain Ahab chase down a space whale in the big black sky. Officially titled Mobius, this movie is based off the classic Herman Melville work.

The Hollywood Reporter describes Mobius as a "psychological action thriller set in deep space, a captain consumed by revenge takes his crew on a death mission fueled by his own ego and will to control an enigmatic alien." Can't wait to see if they give Ahab a futuristic peg leg made out of alien skulls!

"Star Trek" did this a couple of times. Then there was "A.H.A.B.". Futurama even did it. It would warrant some nautical wisecracking if I didn't so admire Melville's book. Undecided

i suppose "obsession" does have a captain obsessed with killing a menacing creature but the similarity pretty much ends there.

kirk wants to cover up a screwup that he did 15 years ago. ahab is part crazy and part asserting free will over fate.

Interesting. I didn't realize that Lynne Ramsay was involved to direct the film.

Ramsay's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN was one of the very best films of 2011. Incredibly intense and difficult, but brilliantly wrought with a superb performance by Tilda Swinton. She also made the equally challenging MOVERN CALLAR and the hallucinatory RATCATCHER.

TRANSFORMERS Part III this won't be!
