Astronaut SCOTT CARPENTER has passed on. He was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts who became the 4th American in space, and the 2nd to orbit the earth. Only John Glenn remains of that original group.

Carpenter uttered the oft-quoted line, "Goodspeed John Glenn" as Glenn's craft left the launching pad.

And, now, we can say, "Goodspeed Scott Carpenter"

i can still name all of the original seven. sheppard, grissom, glenn, carpenter, shirra, cooper, and deke slayton.

Correction: STARSHIP TROOPERS 2 went straight to the Marathon as a "Premiere"!

But, seriously. Lauter was a fine character actor. Never a star, but, a solid dependable presence on both TV and in features. Maybe, someday, THE ROCKETEER will make for Lauter's 2nd appearance at the Marathon.

Ed Lauter was a great character actor. Maybe Rocketeer should play the 'thon in his honor.

Doris Lessing, Nobel Laureate and science fiction author died yesterday.
Lessing was not widely respected for her science fiction  "Canopus in Argos" series but when asked which of her books she considers most important, Lessing chose the sequence.
From Wikipedia,
"These novels present an advanced interstellar society's efforts to accelerate the evolution of other worlds, including Earth. (Similar concepts occur in science fiction by other authors, e.g. the Progressor and Uplift sequences.) Using Sufi concepts, to which Lessing had been introduced in the mid-1960s by her "good friend and teacher" Idries Shah."
(Quote from Ms. Lessing,) What they didn't realize was that in science fiction is some of the best social fiction of our time. I also admire the classic sort of science fiction, like Blood Music, by Greg Bear. He's a great writer." Unlike some authors primarily known for their mainstream work, she has never hesitated to admit that she wrote science fiction and attended the 1987 World Science Fiction Convention as its Writer Guest of Honor."

Thars only two possibilities:Thar is life out there in the universe which is smarter than we are,or we're the most intelligent life in the universe.Either way, it's a mighty sobering thought-WaltKelly

Pogo, thanks for pointing that out. The 'mainstream' obits I've seen all seem to omit her SF stuff.

In their The Lives They Led feature in today's NYT, they noted the death this year of Stuart Freeborn, makeup artist extraordinaire.
Quoting from Wikipedia,
"Freeborn's most famous work is creating the make-up for all of the characters in the Star Wars trilogy, including Chewbacca and Yoda; he based Yoda on his own face and partly on Albert Einstein. He oversaw the design of the original Jabba the Hutt puppet used in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, as well as the creation of the Ewoks.
Freeborn was also the make-up artist on Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, where he created the humans/apes for the "Dawn of Man" sequence. He worked on Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, handling Peter Sellers' multiple lead roles.
Here's a full NYT obit.http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/08/movies/stuart-freeborn-star-wars-makeup-artist...

Thanks, Pogo.

Actually, our resident Make-up guru Caleb mentioned Freeborn's passing at the time: http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1360622974

Of course, it never hurts to remind us of the passing of such a notable figure.

I'd love to see Day of the triffids again. In memory of or otherwise.

Sharif wasn't associated with the SF genre, but, he was one of the 20th Centuries more notable international actors. If for nothing more than that great 60s run of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO and FUNNY GIRL, he is worth remembering.

His few genre titles included: 10,000 B.C., TOP SECRET, 13TH WARRIOR and, the 1973 version of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND.

RIP
