Is there still a lot of drug abuse going on at “Rolling Stone” Magazine?

This article should answer that question:

Not the worst list out there (although #2 is way too high) Now, name the 14 movies on it that have NEVER played the Marathon!

Not the worst list out there

Now that I think about it, finding 50 good sci-fi films made in the 70's is actually pretty hard. ("Marooned" was '69, "Flash Gordon", "Blade Runner" and "Starman" were early 80's.)

I came up with 15 titles that haven't played. #19, #35 and #47 are news to me.

70's Movies on the Rolling Stone List that Haven't Played (I Think)

_2 The Man Who Fell to Earth
_4 'Solaris' (1972)
12 'Rollerball' (1975)
16 'Stalker' (1979)
19 'God Told Me To' (1976)
23 'The Brood' (1979)
32 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes' (1972)
33 'The Black Hole' (1979)
35 'Crimes of the Future' (1970)
39 'Wizards' (1977)
42 'Escape From the Planet of the Apes' (1971)
43 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' (1979)
45 'Deathsport' (1978)
47 'Welcome to Blood City' (1977)
50 'Laserblast' (1978)

Note: At least two films, "Laserblast" and "The Incredible Melting Man", which incredibly has played, both got the MST3K treatment. Grin

Doh! Must have run out of fingers! 15 it is.

Believe me, I've tried for decades to have ESCAPE & CONQUEST of the APES shown, along with MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, GOD TOLD ME TO and ROLLERBALL (I even posted about my close encounter with a rare 35mm print). Really, no excuse for those 5 not have been shown by now when you consider some of the repeats and "premieres" that have.  Lips Sealed

I could see BLACK HOLE and BUCK ROGERS screeing, but, some of the others are marginal SF.

As to STALKER and SOLARIS? As much as they deserve a screening, the reality of showing them might be much worse than the dream (same goes for ALPHAVILLE and CRIMES OF THE FUTURE).  Undecided

* - Historical note: WIZARDS (then titled War Wizards) had clips from it shown at SF/2 before its release date...along with some footage from some STAR WARS thingee........

Alien technology possibly spotted orbiting a distant star
Scientists recently identified an irregular mess of objects orbiting a distant star that defies most natural explanations.

http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/space/stories/alien-technology-possibly-spotted...

Quote:
Nestled between the constellations of Cygnus and Lyra sits what might be the strangest, most mysterious star in our galaxy. This star, designated as KIC 8462852, is not particularly unusual in and of itself. What's odd is what astronomers have spotted orbitting it: an irregularly-shaped mess of objects that appear unnatural, possibly even alien, reports The Atlantic...

“When [I was shown] the data, I was fascinated by how crazy it looked,” explained Jason Wright, an astronomer from Penn State University, to The Atlantic. “Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build.”

In other words, it could be a swarm of mega-structures put there by E.T.-- our first glimpse at alien technology. Perhaps it's a fleet of alien spacecraft, perhaps a network of stellar-light collectors, technology designed to catch energy from the star. You can let your imagination run wild.

"BATH, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Navy is ready to take ownership of the Zumwalt, its largest and most technologically sophisticated destroyer.
Sailors' uniforms and personal effects, supplies and spare parts are being moved aboard the 610-foot warship in anticipation of crew members taking on their new charge, said Capt. James Kirk, the destroyer's skipper....Zumwalt was a challenge to assemble because of all the new technologies, but sea trials show it is a world-class warship with unique capabilities..." Cheesy

I hope the ship's new captain gave his crew a "Risk is Our Business" speech!

C is For Cthulu.
I have noted a fair number of comments here and on other boards that participation in marathons falls off when kids arrive in families.
Well, here's a way to include them in the fun from an early age!http://www.vox.com/2016/7/31/12325578/cthulhu-mythos-abc-illustrated-childrens-b...

An excerpt:
Cthulu sleeps In the Ocean Down South.
Dreaming of when Cultists Devout
Will make him - ho-hey
Rise up with R'lyeh
And crunch little kids in his mouth.

The illustrations are great too!

Thars only two possibilities:Thar is life out there in the universe which is smarter than we are,or we're the most intelligent life in the universe.Either way, it's a mighty sobering thought-WaltKelly
