DRIVE was one of my favorite (if not SF) new films I saw while the board was down. The trailer and ads ARE misleading, but, the film is a funky hybrid of Euro art trash, 80s glossy action films and 70s grindhouse. Putting those three things together severely narrows the target audience, but, #$#$ those who don't get it!  Tongue

CONTAGION was extremely well done. Soderbergh is one of the best filmmakers around. He takes what could have been either an overhyped 'disaster' movie or a procedural snoozer into a snappy pic. If there's a fault with the film it's that Soderbergh's intelligence as a director sometimes saps the film of emotional involvement. On that score, I still prefer OUTBREAK or ANDROMEDA STRAIN as far as viral films go. It's a bit dry if finely honed. And, I've never seen so many filmgoers rush to wash their hands after a movie ended!

Well, Tony, as usual, we disagree.
Drive was a failed early Michael Mann wanna-be rip-off movie: think The Keep or Manhunter or (especially) Thief, which it desperately tried to emulate.  And it fails, 'cause there aint nothing there.
Cool opening scene, though.  And nice to see Albert Brooks play that kind of part.

Soderbergh is an extremely uneven director, & a majority of his movies simply suck.  The Good German?  The Solaris remake?  Oceans 12 & 13?  The Informant?  Out of Sight?  Come on.  Traffic wasnt really all that good, either (especially when compared to its source material).  And then theres The Limey.  Please.
Contagion wasnt terrible, but neither was it good.  IMHO it didnt go far enough: it just skimmed over & skirted around what would really happen in such a situation: what would the banks do?  How would our politicians actually behave?  How would the scumbags at Fox exploit the situation?  Tons of stuff that could have been done or addressed, but, instead, the movie focused on minor things.
And it was shot in digital.  Yuch.
And can we do something about this 2000 character limit?  Please?  I'm out!

Yeah, Tony!  Some crunchy goodness!  Yum, yum!
Only movie I can think of that involves lots of head kicking is GoodFellas, & that was 1990, & the girl wasnt watching.

"T2" -- three times!

Ed and I are obviously on the same wavelength, as I revisited T2 this summer as well...but only once.

Tony D. is right on the mark concerning Drive, one of favorite films of the year.  Contagion, on the other hand, left me cold.  I love Soderbergh, and his chameleonic, often workmanlike style usually appeals to me.  But this one just seemed like it could've been made by many other lesser directors.  I'm with David on this one; I saw it digitally projected, which just made it look flat and DTV.

Um.....is this a parody of an answer?  'Cause now I'm not sure that you've seen many films in any of these genres.

goodfellas put a guy's head in a vice but did not show the eventual squishery. joe neff. i indicated that i could not recall a movie from the 3 genres that had a similar skull cracking scene, and apparently, dat makes two ov us.

Uhm....I said it was shot in the digital format.  I projected it on film.  But it still looked like crap, because digitally shot movies always do.

Uhm....the scene I'm thinking of is the one where DeNiro & Pesci were stomping Billy Bats almost to death on the floor of the bar.
What vice are you talking about?  Head in the pizza oven: yeah.  Samuel Jackson's brains getting splattered: okay.  Vice?

Since the SF portion of the previous thread got taken over by a discussion of DRIVE (and, to a lesser extent CONTAGION) - hence the split-off.

Like Joe said. You guys can't be too familiar with Euro trash or 70s Grindhouse if you think DRIVE was too extreme. (yeah, yeah, maybe we can't think of an EXACT same heady scene, but you'll find stuff there that is far more sexually and morally questionable than in DRIVE - and, DRIVE is, at it's core a quite moral film). And, if you want proof fly out to Ohio for their Horror marathon and Joe will personally hold your hand during a screening of the Euro trash SERBIAN FILM coming up on October 15th:

Excuse me: I'M not familiar with the film I --- you know --- projected?  Oh, ye of little faith!
I didnt fail to get the references.  I just think the movie is a failure.
BTW, is there some reason that my posts are no longer being counted now that youve split them off?
And I'm still waiting for one of you to answer me about this 2000 character limitation!

A couple of gruesome murders ...  I have lots more.

Wild at Heart had a gruesome murder scene wherein Sailor (Cage) beats his attacker to death with his bare hands.  He smashes his head against a wooden railing and then crushes his skull by repeatedly banging it against the marble floor while folks look on.

Ted V. Mikels plays a character in his film Ten Violent Women who ist stomped to deth by a woman in heels.  She actually lunctures his torso with the heel.

I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content or the peace of unburied death.
