And youre saying that a 4K DCP -- which we can only run in 2K -- is "proper"?

     What have you been smoking?

No, the 'proper' quote references that the CE3K Special Edition was shown as part of a lightly attended 'Night Flight' in the upstairs screening room at the Coolidge, but was not part of the Main Marathon that year. It has not been at the main marathon since SF/10 at the Welles.

I haven't seen this film since it came out when I was 7, apart from the bits and pieces that have been quoted, remixed, and outright stolen, the fate of so many greats.  Looking forward to it!

And my point is that it still wont be, because this DCP version is going to look as awful as every single other DCP film-to-video conversion we have ever run.  Not ONE of them has looked anywhere close to its analogue counterpart, and this wont be the exception.
I ran this in 70mm when it came out, & I ran every version since.  And this will look nothing like those, & thats not to even mention that the movie has dated horribly.

Okay, Ive read this, & calling this a "restoration" is the usual abuse of language.  A "restoration" is a return to something that existed before.  This is a new version, & not something that existed before.  And, typically, the studio treated the original elements with such ridiculous carelessness, they now have to go in & try to clean up the mess they themselves made.

Obviously, as far as I'm concerned, you still wont be seeing it!
But hey, whatever floats your boat!

Having seen the restoration this past August, I thought the digital presentation looked pretty damn good. The colors were vibrant and it still had the proper grain of the original. The only drawback was a few soft-looking shots and based on the print I saw at the Brattle a few years back, those were an element of the original photography.

It's still one of Spielberg's greatest works and an excellent start to the line-up. We could use something beautiful and optimistic right about now.

Post by L.A. Connection on Jan 27th, 2018 at 11:28am
Just announced- The Original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! 40th Anniversary and a tribute to Director George Romero who passed away last year. The movie figures in Marathon lore when it was shown as a last minute replacement in Cinema Two at SF/3 when the folks in Cinema One had a bad reaction to Cronenberg's THEY CAME FROM WITHIN. Now, with only a single screen, everyone will get a chance - unless you duck down in t he microcinema, I suppose.

Yup. WORLD WITHOUT END hasn't shown since 1977 at the 'thon! Back in the early 80s, we tracked down a print - but, it was Pan & Scan (and, likely, 16mm although the guage didn't stop us in the Orson Welles days) - so, it wasn't booked. This showing is via our friends at the Warner Archive.

is this the one where rod taylor was testing to see if a girl in the movie was hiding the fact that she understood english and he said in her presence "her legs are chubby" and she blurts out "my legs are not chubby" thus revealing that she did speak english. i could swear that i saw this at tthe maraton within the last 20 years.

An exact quote. I know this because World was shown at the CWRU/Cleveland marathon this year. It is also listed for the upcoming Columbus Marathon. That's three for three. Is Warner Archive having a fire sale? Or perhaps there is another print out there? The CWRU projection was okay although the colors were a little washed out.

In this case, coincidence. The Boston SF Marathon has a relationship with Warner Archive, yes. But, no 'fire sale'. It's just a title they recently restored and that hasn't been show in 41 years! Ohio is doing a Time Travel theme, so it fits.

First I'd heard on Algol, but Garen was trying to locate Time Machine. If that is added along with Source Code, Looper, World Without End and the ending of Superman would give us a Time Travel theme for the 'thon.
Also the title Beyond The Black Rainbow was on the list I received.

Title: Devil's Dozen: SF/43, 2018 Official Film Discussio
Post by L.A. Connection on Feb 12th, 2018 at 4:18pm
My quick thoughts on the dozen movies in the lineup--

THEY CAME FROM WITHIN aka SHIVERS: Just announced! 35mm Film Print. We get to recreate the infamous SF/3 incident where Cinema One so rebelled against Cronenberg's film that it was yanked from the schedule in Cinema Two. The replacement? NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! So, 40 years later, the experiment is reborn! Which will be more shocking to 2018 eyes? (NOTLD was 'on hand' at the Welles because it was a long-running Midnight show there)

7th VOYAGE and 20 MILLION MILES: one Harryhausen per thon is enough, but, hey, we haven't seen 20 Million in two decades.

CE3K: 40th anniversary and all, it was a no brainer. too bad we couldn't celebrate that other big '77 sci-fi film. Don't understand fully why there wasn't a re-release last year for the big 4 O. Legal squabbles with Lucas, Fox and Disney?

LOOPER: One of those movies that was saved from the Black Hole -- Big movies that don't play the year after they came out tend to be forgotten. I fought for this one

ALGOL: Always great to see a silent with, presumably, live music (Jeff Rapsis) at the 'thon. New DCP restoration

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN: one of my all time faves. I know folks wanted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the book. The original only played 6 years ago so it was switched out with this. BONUS! Mary Shelley is a character in this film!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: excited to see this on the big screen for its 50th anniversary (the only other screening of it I attended was at the old Frankenstein's bar near B.U.!). Comes at a propitious time for me since I'm writing an article on the making of it! (oh, yes, the 'thon will be mentioned!)

WORLD WITHOUT END: Got to meet the fine folks at the Warner Archive this past summer in San Diego at Comic Con. When this title came up as one of their new Blu Rays I wanted it right away! It hasn't played since SF/2!! A print was found in the early 80s but it was 16mm and pan&scan so got nixed.

TIME MACHINE: Another Warner Archive special. Hard to believe this cornerstone sci-fi classic has only played twice - the same number of times as GALAXINA!

MARJORIE PRIME: One of last year's better low budget sci-fi indies. Some nice A.I. musings; should play well with the crowd.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: Silly but legendary 3 day wonder from Roger Corman. I worked with Mel Welles (Mushnick) and he claims to have helped co-direct the actors allowing Roger to concentrate on pumping this out that quickly. Ah, everybody wants a piece of the credit when something becomes a cult classic! RIP. Mel.

ARMY OF DARKNESS: Ok. Don't really see the need for this here, especially considering the top heavy horror content already. I'm also not the film's biggest fan. Sue me.

Not a bad lineup, but too much horror (plus a fantasy or two). I do look forward to seeing as many old faces as possible - and, meet some new ones.  :)

An e-mail just went out with this "final marathon lineup":

ALGOL (1920) Music by Jeff Rapsis. German Expressionism. Oscar winner Emil Jannings
SHIVERS, They Came from Within. (1975) The scourge of SF3 returns!
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) 50th Anniversary! The seminal zombie film!
WORLD WITH OUT END (1956) Mars astronauts return & mutants are ruling. Trump?
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3RD KIND (1977) Tones are playing in your brain.
LOOPER (2012) Before Last Jedi Rian Johnsnon got all time travel-y
20 MILLION MILES FROM EARTH (1957) A Harryhausen SFX extravaganza!
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) Just a boy & a girl way before #MeToo
MARJORIE PRIME (2017) Are memoires or holograms enough?
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960) Classic. Great support - Nicholson, Dick Miller
7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1958) OK fantasy, not SciFi, but still Harryhausen.
THE TIME MACHINE (1960) Based on HG Wells' tale with Rod Taylor & the Elois
UNANNOUNCED SPECIAL (1968)

Is ARMY OF DARKNESS out?

And, if so, ARMY lasted shorter than Anthony Scarramuci.  As a parent it's frustrating to see the inconsisent messages between this board, the Facebook group and the e-mails... I just need to know which films are coming so I know what ones I have to take my kid out for!   :-[

Here are all the films announced on the apparently official FB group that aren't in that list: I MARRIED A MONSTER, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, COLOSSAL, SOURCE CODE, SUPERMAN and FRANKENSTEIN.  Hope those folks are checking their e-mail!

As far as I know, ARMY is still in. Must have been a typo. It was in Saturday's email: " new additions:
20 Million Miles from Earth
Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
Algol (1920) w/ live music
Army of Darkness
Bride of Frankenstein replaces Frankenstein"

SUPERMAN is being shown Saturday as part of the Festival in 35mm in the big house.  BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN replaced FRANKENSTEIN.

I'm betting Shivers/They Came From Within still empties a lot of the theater.
Just wish I could remember the final count when it ended at SF3, I think it was less than 20 brave folks from the sellout crowd that started.

My quick thoughts on the dozen movies in the lineup--

     And here are mine.

Quote:
THEY CAME FROM WITHIN aka SHIVERS: Just announced! 35mm Film Print.

So far, the only title I know for sure is on film.  If it's an original print, it's faded; no getting around that.  And the movie is awful, BTW.  I ran it at the Saxon years & years ago.

Quote:
7th VOYAGE and 20 MILLION MILES: one Harryhausen per thon is enough, but, hey, we haven't seen 20 Million in two decades.

Theyre both DCPs, so when you say youll be "seeing" it, you mean kinda sorta.

Quote:
CE3K: 40th anniversary and all, it was a no brainer.

Well, considering it's a DCP file, thats up for debate isnt it?  I ran every version of this in 70mm.  The idea that the DCP will look anything close to that is laughable.

Quote:
too bad we couldn't celebrate that other big '77 sci-fi film. Don't understand fully why there wasn't a re-release last year for the big 4 O. Legal squabbles with Lucas, Fox and Disney?

Thats exactly right.  Fox owns a piece of that, & so does Lucas.  Disney owns the sequels & the sequel rights.  And if, somehow, we were able to book that title, it would be the Special Edition in the glory of yet still more digital.
Why dont you just put on your laserdisc of this at home?  It would amount to pretty much the same thing.

Quote:
LOOPER

There are film prints available of this, but we'll be running the DCP.

Quote:
ALGOL

     Another DCP.

Quote:
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

I still dont know what format this will be in.  Why tell the projectionist, right?  But I know prints are available, because I just ran one in October.

Quote:
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: excited to see this on the big screen for its 50th anniversary

Except youll be watching a DCP file, and as Ive said on this forum many times, digital doesnt do B&W any favours.  It will look like crap.

Quote:
WORLD WITHOUT END: Got to meet the fine folks at the Warner Archive this past summer in San Diego at Comic Con. When this title came up as one of their new Blu Rays I wanted it right away!

And you got it, because thats exactly what we'll be running: the BluRay!  Congratulations!

Quote:
TIME MACHINE: Another Warner Archive special. Hard to believe this cornerstone sci-fi classic has only played twice

I ran this the second of those two time, & it was a print.  Now, it's a BluRay.

Quote:
MARJORIE PRIME

     DCP.

Quote:
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: Silly but legendary 3 day wonder from Roger Corman.

     BluRay!

Quote:
ARMY OF DARKNESS: Ok. Don't really see the need for this here

Youre telling me!  I ran a gorgeous print of this in October.  For the Thon?  BluRay!

Are we sensing a pattern here?  ::)

Wow! I've heard various versions. Some say it was only about 1/3 of the house that left, some 1/2 and you say 250+!?

What time was it on?

12:45AM according to my schedule (Cinema 2 was going to have it at 4:55AM.)
Y'know, I stand with maybe 20 left at it's lowest point, though at the end many may have wandered back to their seats.

So here is my take on the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good:
Lots of good classic movies I would love to see again and experience with this crowd (CE3K, Time Machine, 7th Voyage, Bride of Frankenstein, 20 million miles).  Several movies I have never seen and sound interesting (ALGOL, Marjorie Prime, World without End, Little Shop of Horrors(1960), Looper).
I am good with two Harryhausen because it's awesome, but that's probably the max for one thon.

The bad:
Still a bit heavy on the horror, but improved from before.  Replacing Frankenstein with Bride of Frankenstein was a good call.
I love the older sci fi's from the 50's and 60's, but this thon is a bit heavy here.  Of the 14 announced movies, only three were made in the last 40 years.

The ugly:
I haven't seen They Came from Within, but if the reaction was so terrible, why would this be shown again?  I would suggest replacing this with Alpha Gateway.  I just saw this Saturday night at the Fest and it was a really good, recent, independent movie that most probably haven't heard of.

It's a bit of history that should be fun to re-create. Remember, the screening of THEY CAME FROM WITHIN was Forty years ago! Times have changed considerably since then, as have audience tastes.

We've successfully shown Cronenberg's RABID, SCANNERS and THE FLY at the 'thon with nary a peep. RABID (which was Cronenberg's direct horror follow-up) only a few years ago. No issues. Not to mention RE-ANIMATOR (twice), FROM BEYOND etc..

In a way, it's an experiment to show just how MUCH audience's viewing habits and attitudes have evolved in the four decades of the event.

Plus technically both They Came From Within and Night Of The Living Dead have not had a full showing at the marathon. Each was only seen by half a crowd way back at SF3. Now they will each go to 1.5 showings in the 'thon history.

And the results are in!

Close Encounters - Digital!
Time Machine - Digital!
7th Voyage - Digital!
Algol - Digital!
Marjorie Prime - Digital!
Shiver - actual Film!
Bride of Frankenstein - Just came in, & it's Digital!
Night of Living Dead - Digital!
World Without End - Digital!
Little Shop of Horrors - Digital!
Army of Darkness - Digital!
20 Million Miles - Digital!
Looper - Digital!

So, summing up, there is exactly one film feature print (though, interestingly, a print of Frankenstein has arrived, but why would anyone want to see or run that?), & one film cartoon.  All the rest........digital sludge!   :P

Nobody on this board better ever say the word "quality" to me for a long, long time.

As for Tony's usual Stay Awake thing.......why bother?  If you doze off, just buy the discs & watch 'em at home!  Wont make the slightest bit of difference.   :D

Interesting,  I read today on another forum of someone who claims,to NOT have been at sf/3 that he still saw NOTLD  at one of the first two thons. I assume he's mistaken.

Nope, SF3 was the first and only showing. It used to show up as a regular Welles midnight show though so maybe they're confusing seeing it then. Maybe even seeing it Saturday at midnight then coming out and getting in line for SF3. That would explain why they had a print on hand to show.

Had a good time at the marathon. This year was my 23rd consecutive year with my friend. I did feel this year was a bit 50's/60's heavy with practically no modern films in the entire lineup. I do hope future years spread it out a bit more across the decades. There were only two films from this century this year - Looper and Marjorie Prime I wish there would have been a few more. See you next year!
