The first Officially announced film for SF.42 has been released - THE ROCKETEER. It makes it's official Marathon debut. And, it's a 35mm FILM print!

Reactions?

That movie sucks; there were 70mm prints made of it; if last year is any indication, it will be one of a terribly small number of actual prints shown, while you guys sit in the theatre the rest of the time & watch TV.

Is that what you were looking for?

This board seems to be dead, Tony.  Not one comment on my 70 Fest either.  Ah, well.   ::)

I didn't hate this movie. It's more of a "nice little movie". A bit early to be announcing bookings, this is the earliest I've heard of a film being secured for the 'thon.

It's an ok movie from what I remember. Haven't seen it since it came out, however.

With the remake/sequel in the news, it was discussed early, partly because studios sometimes pull the original from distribution, so lock it in when you can. Plus, 35mm prints are rare.

And, hey it's never too early!  ;)

It's a great film, especially for fans of the original comic series.
Some iconic panels are recreated perfectly.
But it IS missing Bettie Page or rather her doppelganger from the comic.

Okay film, not a blockbuster.
The comicy retro feel is similar to the rarely lamented Agent Carter.
It is hard to find a film that generates large enthusiasm and is less than extremely familiar to  BSFFM fans.
Any slow announcement build up is great, but perhaps picking a film to announce that has a little more ability to excite would be good.
Columbus' announcement of High Rise (a film that I did not like) before its commercial release did provoke their fans to continued enthusiasm  -and perhaps - renewed attendance.

At this point it's more that Garen is announcing prints in 35MM that he has located and managed to get the okay to show. We also had some interest shown from a post about The Rocketeer sequel being planned that was announced on Facebook.
He gave a clue about a second film saying it has a cameo by the author of the book it is based on and his mother.

And there is still the possibility of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy being booked for the '42' theme.

Serious hints on Facebook about a 2nd selection. Silent.

From FB: "It's been called a "science-fiction melodrama (that) remains one of the most extravagant cinematic experiences of the 1920s and a singular invention from a miscellany of leading visual and musical stylists of the time." And yeah, it's heading to SF42 in only its second North American screening since who knows when. Oh yeah, in a new pristine digital remastering. Guesses anyone?"

Easy one. Woman in the Moon directed by Fritz Lang      with Klaus Pohl, Willy Fritsch, Gerda Maurus, & Fritz Rasp.
Originally my suggestion, but retracted.

Some quick reactions.
The Rocketeer- great, look forward to seeing it on a big screen again.
The Creature From The Black Lagoon-classic, long overdue for the marathon, will it be a 3D version though?
Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy-pretty funny plus a nice tribute to Alan Rickman, plus yeah, 42.
John Dies At The End-pretty crazy with just about any kind of effect you can think of.
Kingdom Of The Spiders- schlocky as hell, look for a lot of Shatner toupee jokes, was probably a lot scarier before tarantulas were in every pet shop.
SSSSSSS- weird, 7 s's is the official spelling I guess.
This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy- looks okay in the trailer.
Midnight Special- interesting trailer
Neither Heaven Nor Earth- ???

Title: Quick Takes: SF/42 Announced Films reaction
Post by L.A. Connection on Jan 9th, 2017 at 3:14pm
My quick takes:

The Rocketeer - 35mm print of an ok title, but havent seen it since it came out
Creature from the Black Lagoon - Hopefully in 3D. Been requested for DECADES
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - It's ok, but, I prefer the TV series and radio versions
John Dies at the End - Haven't seen any of the director's work in decades; interested
Kingdom of Spiders - good late nite schlock
SSSSSSSS - ditto; although a bit better as a movie as I recall
This Giant Paper Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy - "Festival Award Winner". And, a "spoof" -- rut ro rorge!!
Midnight Special - the most disappointing SciFi film of 2016. Dinner break.
Neither Heaven Nor Earth - One of those tiny foreign films I kinda of wanted to see. Not sure how this arthouse flick will do with the 'thon crowd. The movie made $12,000 total at the box office. That's right - THOUSAND.

My quick takes:

The Rocketeer - OK. Lose the movie, read the comic.
Creature from the Black Lagoon - Excellent and long overdue.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Love the book and show, the movie, not so much.
John Dies at the End - The first two Phantasms were fun. Bubba-Ho_Tep is ok but we are starting to bloat with so-so movies.
Kingdom of Spiders - good late nite schlock
SSSSSSSS - same but I fear that the schlock is not over we may have one more.
This Giant Paper Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy - "Festival Award Winner". Gawdawful trailer. No budget, very derivative. Hopefully, not Motivational Growth bad.
Midnight Special - looking forward to this one. Don't know much about it.
Neither Heaven Nor Earth - sounds intriguing. Looking forward to this but I might have played this at the Fest and save space for a more established title. Lord knows, we could use it.

The Rocketeer - Looking forward to seeing this again.
Creature from the Black Lagoon - Same as above.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Should play well with the crowd.
John Dies at the End - My brother recommended this, glad to get a chance to see it.
Kingdom of Spiders - Sounds fun.
SSSSSSSS - Ditto.
This Giant Paper Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy - "Festival Award Winner". Don't have high hopes for this one.
Midnight Special - Saw it last week, thought it was pretty good.
Neither Heaven Nor Earth - Always good to see something unusual.

The Rocketeer - Been a while for this one with me, although it involves bunch of people/things I love (reminder: Timothy Dalton has an uncanny ability to make everything he's in better).

Creature from the Black Lagoon - Really, never at the marathon before?  Must be a common pick everywhere else around Boston; wonder if we'll get the same anaglyph 3D print Universal usually sends.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - (and if we do, keep the glasses around; the folks who made this one made the "malfunctioning hologram" in this one a red-blue 3D image)

John Dies at the End - A ton of fun, although I'm told it only adapts half the book.

Kingdom of Spiders - Sure, bring on some Shatner.

SSSSSSSS - Hmm, that's a lot of 70s creature crud (potentially)

This Giant Paper Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy - The folks who saw it seemed to really like it, but then, the folks who make it to the 5pm weekday shows at the festival are really, really forgiving.  I had no problem missing it.

Midnight Special - science fictionally, only halfway there, but Jeff Nichols is really good at everything else, and Michael Shannon is great.

Neither Heaven Nor Earth - Barely heard of this, but they have been making some great, unnerving horror in France lately.

FIVE MILLION (aka QUATERMASS & THE PIT) has been discussed. For some reason however, it has fallen out of favor with distributors. It used to make the rounds regularly.

MONOLITH MONSTERS? Eh, it's a marginal title, although Universal may still have some moldy old prints.

Agree that Monolith Monsters is less than a necessary choice. Formulaic 50s Creature Feature, but better than many. As far as prints, Columbus showed it in 2013. You could always ask them about access.
Always have a soft spot for all Quatermass as I saw them when I was quite young on the BBC. Haven't revisited this in (50?) years.

Was that the Quatermass TV serial or the film version?
Since likely may only have video copies available it might be worth showing the British versions which I think were released in Canada.
I saw DVD release of Quatermass & The Pit and it was a better quality copy and had some scenes not in the US release.

I think it's a pretty varied lineup. We also have to keep in mind that we are trying to appeal to a younger demo now. Maybe, to you or me, something like GALAXY QUEST or GATTACA is too "recent", but, to somebody less advanced in age, GALAXY QUEST is a long time ago. 17 years is the same gap as between TIME MACHINE and STAR WARS! Even HITCHHIKER is 10 years old - the same space as between BLADE RUNNER and SILENT RUNNING!

Would I personally liked to have seen something from the 70s? Yes, but, it's not about one person or even one demographic.

Seems like a lot of the usual marathon elements (a big sci-fi movie from the past year, a goofy schlock movie, a silent movie) are falling by the wayside, though access to prints could certainly be a factor.

I'm happy to see Time Crimes on the list as that's one I've always figured would be a good fit and Brazil and Predator on a big screen are always welcome.

Title: Final Sked? SF/42 Announced Films reaction thread
Post by L.A. Connection on Feb 6th, 2017 at 2:34pm
Now that we have a real final (?) schedule...here are my quick takes:

Overall, quite good with the new adds and drops. I would personally have liked to have seen either SSSSSSSSSSS or KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS stay since we always need a jolt of schlock. I personally did not care for MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (not nearly 'special'enough), but I am surprised it didn't make the cut.

BRAZIL - One of the greats. Or, at least, near-greats. I personally don't need to see it again, but, I understand than many younger thoners have probably never seen it on the big screen.

TIME CRIMES - One of those smaller movies I never got around to seeing. Really looking forward to it. But, two subtitled movies on the same lineup?

GALAXY QUEST - a lot of fun, and a worthy repeat. Nice shout-out to Alan Rickman, too

MAD MAX FURY ROAD - a welcome injection of action to the previously announced lineup. Should be a crowd pleaser. Still surprised that THUNDERDOME has never shown considering the popularity of this series with the 'thon crowd. I've been pushing for it...since about 1986..............  ::)

PREDATOR - One of those odd cases of a popular SF title that somehow fell into the 'Black Hole' of 'thon programming finally emerges to make the lineup.

TREMORS - Like Galaxy Quest, a worthy and fun repeat

GATTACA - One of those movies that keeps climbing up the list of faves for hardcore sci-fi fans. Another worthy repeat - but, maybe too many repeats for one schedule??

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE - Should be a nice cross-generational film for the crowd - a 70s phenomenon updated with modern production values

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON - The Somerville doesn't do 3D in the big house, so it looks like this will be 'flat'. That's fine. The old Red-Blue glasses type 3D was never all that great anyway. I'd rather see the Creature clean and crisply on the big screen!!

JOHN DIES AT THE END - Should be a good late night cult flick

NEITHER HEAVEN NOR EARTH - The second subtitled foreign film. I look forward to it, but, will it be too much of a stretch for many 'thoners?

PAPER MACHE BOULDER - Have you watched the trailer? Looks like a down under Galaxy Quest.  <iframe width="320" height="276" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DhtsgboAMUM?ecver=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

ROCKETEER - Looking forward to seeing this. Haven't since it came out

Overall, pretty good. Get yer popcorn ready!!

Not saying most of the marathon is 35MM, but Garen does like to book ones he can find. Of the 4 repeats, Galaxy Quest, Brazil, Tremors and Gattaca, would not be surprised if 3 are 35MM prints. Rocketeer is also 35MM and Mad Max may be 70MM.

My quick take on the lineup.

Galaxy Quest- Great film and really funny, even moreso with the Marathon crowd.
Time Crimes- decent trailer and looks interesting.
Mad Max Fury Road- Haven't seen it since original release and look forward to seeing it on the Somerville big screen.
Predator- Arnie's films have a certain charm now, almost time capsules of another film making era.
Brazil-Always great on the big screen, so many deatils that you find something new each viewing.
Tremors-A good solid monster movie.
Gattaca- Really good sci-fi film noir. Alan Arkin is great in it.
Hithhikers Guide To The Galaxy- Not as good as the radio show but still pretty funny and another that should play even better with the 'thon crowd.
Creature From The Black Lagoon- A classic, too bad we're showing it flat as the old 3D glasses add some extra campy fun.
John Dies At The End- Good and weird film from the director of Phantasm.
Neither Heaven Nor Earth- Might be my nap or dinner break
The Rocketeer-Haven't caught this film since a sneak preview at the old Paris Cinema in Boston. Looking forward to seeing how well it stands up.

Objection, your Honour, draws conclusion from facts not in evidence.
Whats your proof of this?  You think there werent prints of Gremlins, Blade Runner, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Pitch Black, all of which we ran digitally last year?  There were, there are, & we didnt get them.  So please dont post statements that are demonstrably false.  Thank you.

Rocketeer is 35.  Thats confirmed.  No 70mm prints of Mad Max Fury Road were ever struck, so cross that off your list.  We'll see about the others.  I'm not holding my breath!

The word has just come down that none of these will be film prints, all of them are digital, so in terms of you "would not be surprised".....surprise!   :o :o :o

As things stand now (always subject to change, of course), we will be running TWO -- count 'em, TWO -- prints out of thirteen titles.  They are Rocketeer & Hitchhiker's Guide.

Now, you may ask, are there prints available of any of these other titles?  And the answer would be, there sure are.  We actually ran a couple of them recently.

So please feel free to go into further detail about how we "show as many films in 35mm as possible."  Just kindly do it with some care: if I laugh myself to death over your explanation, there wont be anyone to run all this video!   ;D ;D ;D

I'm not even going to post a print report this year.  Why bother?  Sigh.   :-/

Well, that is very sad to hear. Is this because the prints are more expensive to rent?

Based my guess on the info sent out by Garen with the marathon list that we'd

"Fury Road is intended to be in 70mm, waiting on confirmation. There are about 4 - 35 mm prints, one bluray and the rest DCP."

But things don't always work out.

Of the 4 repeats, Galaxy Quest, Brazil, Tremors and Gattaca, would not be surprised if 3 are 35MM prints.

And the change has come.  Now I'm being told that Rocketeer, after being listed for weeks as being 35mm, is a DCP.  I'm also being informed that Galaxy Quest will be 35mm.
So, still only two prints.   :'(
Enjoy watching about twenty hours of television, kids!   ;D

If you've read my posts over the  years you know I'm not one to see a lot of movies multiple times. So other than Mad Max IV I haven't  seen any of these movies  in years if not decades! Four I haven't at all: JOHN DIES, TIMECRIMES, Paper Mache Boulder & HEAVEN  NOR EARTH.

The others?

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE - Saw it the week it came out in 2005
GALAXY QUEST - Last time I saw it was at the thon 16 years ago at SF/26
CREATURE BLACK LAGOON - I saw it a couple of times when it had it's 3D revival back in the very very early 80s (double bill with IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE). So, over 30 years!
GATTACA - Not seen it since it's triumphant showing at SF/23, some 19 years ago
MAD MAX IV - I did see it opening weekend last summer
BRAZIL - SF/25!
PREDATOR - the one and only time I saw it was when it came out in 1987. 30 years ago!
ROCKETEER - When it came out in '91
TREMORS - one and only time was at the 'thon in '91!

So, even though I've seen most of the movies, it will still be pretty 'fresh' for my eyes!

And the change, she has come again.  A 35mm print of The Rocketeer has arrived, so I'll be showing that.
We're now up to three prints.   :o

Looking forward to the print report as brief as it may be . Also  note that the movies listed in the header are listed in the order scheduled to be shown. I.e. Hitchhikers Guide is 1st up with Tremors as the finale.  ;)
