well? anything?

Haven't seen it yet, but I 've heard from friends that it's good.

i saw it with my people. the tuesday bargain matinee no 3d. my review of the previous installment "star trek: into darkness" was in short "worst star trek ever". i was chastised here and on many forums. then comicon voted on a ranking of all star trek movies and "into darkness" finished last. iow comicon ranked "into darkness" at worst star trek ever. clearly they saw the same problems that i did. with access to khan's blood and the blood of all his shipmates the federation now has the power of life over death. i mean, how can anyone in this reboot ever die. i therefore waited for an opportunity to say "why on earth don't they give him some khan's blood.?"  when spock received word that alternate universe spock had died i said "why on earth didn't they give him some of khan's blood" i was soundly rebuked when a nearby audience member said "he's vulcanian". i would not choose that point in time to go into a debate over spock's human heritage and the fact that mcoy was investigating the effect of khan's blood by injecting it into tribbles.
later in the movie mccoy was treating a crewman who had his  life force sucked out by krull. i suppose he was beyond the help of khan's blood.
the writer's had dealt with the issue by avoiding it. more later.

Been meaning to write something up on this one. It's a decent 'bridge' movie. I have been critical (while still enjoying) the first two movies in this re-boot for 'repeating the characters' future'). While there is a nod or two to Spock and the classic crew, this one pretty much stands on it's own. The characters are given a bit of room to breathe on their own, and Pine is growing into the Kirk role.
The downside is that this is only half the movie. The other half - the actual story - is kind of muddled and never really gels. Jusin Lin was apparently brought in to goose up the action in order to build an audience for this franchise beyond the Trekkies. Perhaps, they were swinging for some of those Star Wars level numbers. Ironically, this is the lowest grossing of the trio of reboots.
In some ways, this represents the series at a crossroads (once again). Hopefully, this will be a bridge where character and ideas are Paramount, and the effects take a back seat. Yes, that will mean lower budgets, and less spectacular set pieces, but, Trek at heart was never about those anyway. Here's hoping anyway.
