Not a bad start.

* It's been awhile since I saw They Live, and while it's not my favorite Carpenter, it's not bad at all.  I hate that it takes people dying for folks to remember nifty movies, though.

* Big-Ass Spider was a ton of fun at BUFF a couple years ago, and Mike Mendez makes the kind of fun genre movies that I think the 'thon audience will dig this one (also: check out Tales of Halloween at the Brattle, on VOD, and other places next weekend - his segment is a lot of fun).

* Ex Machina didn't tickle me quite as much as the similar but less-slick The Machine did a year earlier, but it's a very solid directorial debut for Alex Garland, who has been the writer on a pretty darn great string of sf material over the past decade and a half.

THEY LIVE has been on the consideration radar for several years now. Sometimes, it takes a bit of a nudge.

I, too, didn't find EX MACHINA to be the greatest thing since sliced bread (my review: http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1429040022), but, it IS the kind of smaller SF film that the Marathon should champion. Whenever one of these indies play the 'thon, it seems as if half the audience or more hasn't seen it.

Heck, hasn't heard of it.  I'm always kind of shocked at just how much people at this event and some others like it sometimes don't seem to stretch their interest in science fiction film beyond those twenty-four hours at all.

(Which isn't unique to the 'thon at all; Fantastic Fest recently concluded and my social media feeds are still clogged with people who seem to have no awareness of genre/world/independent film not somehow associated with Austin's Alamo Drafthouse!)

Title: 3 more: SF/41 Lineup - Discussion & Announcements
Post by L.A. Connection on Nov 18th, 2015 at 12:16pm
Three more movies were announced today:

ARROWHEAD
(2016) Aussie SciFi winner! Stranded a man faces more than loneliness.

POLDER
(2015) A reality bending neuro-game dangerously lures a widow deeper. From Switzerland

HIMMELSKIBET
A Trip to Mars

(1918) Danish Film Inst remastering w/live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis.

Assuming the first two are for the Festival and the silent is for the Marathon. Confirmation coming.

There's a character in Himmeskibet/Trip To Mars named Professor Dubius.
I'm guessing he will doubt the trip can be done.

Is that the character name in the original movie, or just the USA dub?

Am looking forward to Himmelskibet, a silent movie at the 'thon should be fun.
They Live is a fun movie from the eighties, and Roddy Piper kicking butt and chewing bubblegum.
Saw Ex Machina on cable a few weeks ago and thought it would make a great 'thon entry. Very post modern.
I don't know anything about the other two movies,

Heard the owner of the rights to Day of the Triffids had been located, any update on it showing at SF 41? I don't think it's played the 'thon since the early days of the Welles.

Yup, as far as I know this restoration only played once at the TCM festival here in L.A. in 2010. Apparently, there have been rights issues that have prevented its distribution. Hopefully, they will be overcome.

Amazingly, TRIFFIDS played the very first, and then the third Marathon -- and never since!!

EX MACHINA was named as one of the Best 10 movies of the year by the prestigious Producer's Guild of America. The PGA is considered THE most important step on the way to an Oscar nomination.

And, THE MARTIAN and MAD MAX FURY ROAD were also nominated. A big haul for SF & Fantasy movies.

According to the latest lineup I read via email, this is a another banner year for the SFM.  I can't wait!   :D (Well, OK, I know I have to, but I'd rather just start now.  Good thing I have a Festival ticket!)

Especially anticipating "Invasion / BodySnatchers" (love that 1st version!), "Himmelskibet" (sp? love silents w. live music!), "High Treason" (heretofore unknown to me, so a true adventure), "Man Who Fell to Earth" (never shown at the 'Thon, so I've never seen it!), "Blade Runner" (what's not to like?)...  Looking forward to others, as well, of course.
Meanwhile, think "MELT!"
