Title: IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS for the big 4-0 Marathon!
Post by L.A. Connection on Aug 17th, 2014 at 4:56pm
Our big 40th Marathon is coming up in February 2015!

Post your ideas and suggestions here!

Anybody like the idea of showing several old favorites along with a few new movies? Or, should it be ALL oldies? All First Timers!?

I find it hard to believe too and I've been there all the way.

I think we should have a mix of old and new.
Of course old is a relative term anyway, us oldtimers would say classic 50's films whereas others might think of films from before the year 2000 (or later.)

I'm going to work up a list of suggestions but right off the bat I was thinking we should definitely try to have the first film shown at SF1,
This Island Earth.

Also maybe a film released the year of the first marathon that has not been shown yet. Best choice might be the original
Rollerball.

Mainly because other choices would be
The Giant Spider Invasion
The Land That Time Forgot
Bug
Terror of Mechagodzilla

Although an interesting possibility might be
The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Great post!

If ANYBODY should be listened to, it's Brian since he's actually been to ALL the previous Marathons! (along with Simon).

I like a lot of these suggestions. Not sure how THIS ISLAND EARTH would go over post-MST3K.

And, believe it or not, a 35mm print of GIANT SPIDER INVASION exists!

I like the idea of including films from around the time the Marathon started (in that period where "2001" should have changed everything about the look of Science Fiction films and "Star Wars" actually did). "Westworld", "Phase IV", "Dark Star", "Soylent Green" and "Silent Running" have run recently. I recall from the old board that the only known surviving print of "Rollerball" was in terrible shape.

How About "Capricorn I" (1977)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077294/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

or Hammer's "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974): Peter Cushing's last turn as the Doctor and David Prowse as the Monster.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071519/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Hammer has been actively restoring their classic titles. Maybe LA should keep an eye out for it. ;)
--------------
Then of course there's always "Zardoz" (1974)."Flesh Gordon" and "The Terminal Man" are also from 1974 but let's not go there.  ;)

A Hammer era Frankenstein film might be a good idea.
Though I think I'd rather see Peter Cushing as the doctor in Dr Who and The Daleks, especially since we know there is a 35mm copy that The Brattle ran last year.

A film that is LOOOOOONG overdue being run is The Creature From The Black Lagoon, it may be the last of the 50's era classics that never showed at any marathon (though its sequels have.)

More recent titles
Dredd
Pacific Rim (both from last year and I know Pacific Rim has some really vocal opponents on the board)

The Edge of Tomorrow (this years very under appreciated summer action film that is really a great story.)

Some older stuff now, with a link to their trailers.

Altered States (as a tribute to makeup artist Dick Smith)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbYT3UclhNY

They Live (just cause we've never shown it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJC4R1uXDaE
Boy does that film have a cheesy trailer

Watchmen (this was a film made too early, before non comic readers really knew what a super hero film is like, this is a more serious version.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB3AxenYAyU

Sunshine (I'd never even heard of this film till I saw it show up on some online 'best sci-fi films you've never seen' lists)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veC25b8Vd2E

And finally my usual 'outside the box' idea.
Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope (a really fun documentary about the con that puts a nice human face on fandom and has a lot of heart. Plus the con itself has become a huge news story every year now.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN41gXXUlLI

That's it for this time.

There are some nuggets here if someone can reach out.
http://www.filmlinc.com/films/series/strange-lands-international-sci-fi

Them! is long overdue.

Not so wild about showing This Island Earth so close on the heels of MT3K. However, the original The Day The Earth Stood Still has not made an appearance in some time. The Andromeda Strain is way overdue for another look.  5 Million Years To Earth.  One Million Years B.C. (with Raquel)

The main thing to remember about This Island Earth is that it was the very first film shown at the very first marathon. That's the main reason for it show up at SF40.
Plus I would love to see its description from SF1 in a modern marathon program "The StarTrekiest"

Damn, the board going down for a few days seems to have killed the thread.

Got a little inside info that a long planned upgrade to the Somerville is gonna double our film possibilities.

Now I'm off to draw up a list of 10 reasons why we SHOULD show Transformers 4 at SF40.

TALK ME OUT OF IT!!
Come on comment on mine and other suggestions here and make some of your own!

One of the dream showings this year would be STAR WARS.

No, I'm not the biggest fan of it myself, but, it IS historically important to the 'Thon. At the 2nd Marathon in February 1977, a preview clip reel was shown AND soon-to-be collector's items Posters were given away (I wonder how many still exist in Marathoid hands?). Plus, along with CLOSE ENCOUNTERS 3K, it blew open the doors to the genre when the 'thon was but a mere child. Those two movies moved the marathon from the image of "those old 50s flicks" to blockbuster status.

BUT, it is highly unlikely to be shown:

- It's difficult to get permission from Lucas AND Fox to show it, period. As far back as SF/15 in 1990, STAR WARS was yanked from the schedule at the last minute.

- 35mm prints have been squirrled away. DCPs are all that are out there now. And......

---....those DCPs are from the notorious CGI re-release editions in the late-90s which both look like sh!t and are of the less desirable versions to boot.

--- And, even if those issues could be overcome (or ignored), read this account from a theater who wanted, REALLY WANTED, to show this for this past year's May The Fourth Be With You day:

Maybe its just a case of things have really changed.
Star Wars was shown at SF10, we were permitted to show it ONLY if we agreed to tell everyone that Lucasfilm had let us do it. We also got 20,000 Leagues from Disney only if we agreed to NEVER tell anyone they let us show it.
Kinda weird that now the same company owns both.

Biggest problem I see with getting Star Wars is that they are going to finally do a DVD release of the original version. I would not be surprised if they do a theatrical re-release before it comes out.

That being said, it still just might be possible, wonder who actually owns theatrical rights since it was released by Fox.

Disney owns the theatrical releasing (and all other) rights.
And it kind of figures: Lucas modeled himself on Walt, & when it came to ripping off children with inferior garbage, those two hucksters will never be topped.

Film Forum in New York recently ran an "archival 35mm print" for their Alec Guinness festival.  So prints are out there & available, if you push the right buttons.
In addition, I know where to locate some copies, but it's even money whether I would go through the trouble.

Unfortunately, the Film Forum screening, while on film, was of the CGI-infected 1997 re-release.

More importantly, the original film ("A New Hope") is still owned by Fox and Lucas. The rights to the sequels and new movies is owned by Disney.

As per the two Hollywood Industry bibles:

From The Hollywood Reporter: "But Fox owns distribution rights to the original Star Wars, No. 4 in the series, in perpetuity in all media worldwide."

From Variety: "Disney controls the “Star Wars” vault with one significant exception — the original 1977 pic, for which 20th Century Fox has distribution rights in all media in perpetuity."

:P

Well, youve have a problem here.  All the original domestic prints from 1977 will have completely faded to red by this point.  You wanna show one of those?  (The 1997 prints are on LPP stock.)  I dont think thats a good idea.  If you want a print with colour, you have only one choice.
There is an exception, however: that would be the British IB Technicolor prints, of which I think maybe ten survive.  Lucas owns one, but he seizes any of those he can find, & I dont believe he ever has (or ever will) let that print out.  He doesnt want the original version shown.
Now, I'm not saying it cant be done, but my palm, and a couple of others, would have to be crossed with a considerable amount of silver, & I dont see that happening, for some reason.  (I repeat: considerable.)
The OCN for Star Wars is worthless at this point: it has faded beyond recovery, and, further, was severely damaged by a lab in Japan (long story).  Any & all versions of that movie released in any format now have to come from video and/or digital masters.

     Didnt know this.  Thank you.

That's why I prefaced my opening comment that it was a long longshot to show the original STAR WARS. Too bad. It has a historical connection to the Marathon as well as, of course, the genre from during the period of the Marathon's birth.

Oh, well. There's always THE PHANTOM MENACE on DCP!

:) :) :) :)

Not sure if you saw the BFI trailer I posted in the YouTube Goodness section.
Looks like a major event going from October to Jan with showings in cinemas, on TV and outdoor events. A couple of films we still have not shown are on the trailer and the fest might be a source for possible prints. It is after all the British FILM Institute.
Wonder if they're showing High Treason which was the British answer to Metropolis.

Yeah it is hard to find out specific stuff for the main area screenings.
This is the closest one I've found.
http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/announcements/bfi-takes-giant-leap-sci-fi-days-fear-wonder

I found this page which seems to have the scheduled events for outside London.

They have a nice video here of the opening outdoor screenings including Brian Blessed and director Mike Hodges at a Flash Gordon screening.

Dateline Lawrence KS:

Tonight Liberty Hall in Lawrence KS is running two big bug classics: "Them" and "Tarantula"
http://www.retrococktail.org/cinema-a-go-go.html

In the future things will be making a cheesier turn:

Quote:
Cinema a Go-Go is back at Liberty Hall on Friday, January 17, where space is the place. We'll screen a couple low budget Italian-made sci-fi epics from 1965. In Wild, Wild Planet, a nutty scientist conducts weird experiments to create a race of supermen. This one's packed to the gills with futuristic cities, rocket bases, big-finned spaceships, sexy female spies, lumbering astro-zombies and an orbiting space station called Gamma 1.

In Mario Bava's classic Planet of the Vampires, a spaceship crew is downed on a shadowy planet and battles evil disembodied aliens. Some say the film's plot and visual design influenced Ridley Scott's Alien.

While "Them" and "Planet of the Vampires" have certainly made their mark on the Marathon schedule, not so "Tarantula" and "Wild Wild Planet". Could this mean that prints of the latter two are out there?

Unfortunately, the web page doesn't give format info. They could just be DVDS. We are aware of 35mm prints of THEM! however.

And, TARANTALA played as SF/5. It wouldn't be a 'thon virgin.

You're right L.A., Tarantula has been shown and Wild Wild Planet's trailer used to show up almost every year.

Seem familiar?
I've seen the film and it probably would go over well, it's one of those Italian sci-fi epics of that era. It doesn't quite have the budget or special effects to do what it wants but it tries anyway.

First:  One from this year that I saw at a festival last year and which really deserves more of an audience here:  The Machine.

Second:  I didn't have time to do in-progress festival updates while out of town, but here are the sci-fi-y things I saw at Montreal's Fantasia Festival and Austin's Fantastic Fest this fall.  Some are probably more festival-oriented than marathon pictures, but it's worth mentioning that this was a pretty great year for science fiction on the festival circuit, especially in Montreal, where they had a couple of good programs that focused on this stuff specifically.

Automata - Apparently getting a limited release right now, it's a pretty decent "rebellious robots" movie with some of Antonio Banderas's best English-language work in years, mostly-practical effects for the robots, and a nifty supporting cast.  A bit slow at points, but not bad at all.

Cheatin' - The new Bill Plympton animated feature, which is all some may need to know.  A sexy comedy with a mind-control twist toward the end, although very stylized.

Closer to God - The festival should definitely look at this one, a high-aiming film about the reaction to the world's first cloned baby.  Pretty good, well worth a look.

Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder - This thing is kind of adorable, featuring kids whose scientist neighbor develops a chemical that allows one to break odorless wind powerfully enough to be launched into the sky.  Jo Nesbo is 3-for-3 with fun movie adaptations (although the other two were violent caper/thrillers).

Ejecta - Kind of a rough Canadian alien-abduction movie, half found-footage/half talky indie.  A few nice performances, especially by familiar character actor Julian Richings and Lisa Houle.

Goal of the Dead - Yeah, this nearly-two-and-a-half hour French zombie soccer comedy isn't playing anywhere, but I dig it; it's genuinely funny and features a cast of characters that regularly defy expectations.

Hal - A spiffy little animated movie that runs a fairly quick hour about a robot who takes on human form to help a grieving widow.

Kite - Fairly weak action movie featuring Samuel L. Jackson as a cop aiding the daughter of his old partner, who is seeking revenge while addicted to a PTSD drug that is doing damage to her long-term memory.  In very limited release and VOD now, has some nice moments but I suspect folks are better off sticking to the original anime.

Monsterz - A Japanese remake of the excellent Korean Haunters (itself a sort of cape-less superhero movie about a showdown between a man with mind control powers and one with rapid healing) whose characters aren't as much fun and which is burdened with mythology it doesn't need.  Still think the original would be fun to have.

Predestination - Currently scheduled for a January 2015 release, but given how it will probably go in and out of theaters quickly, should still be considered for the marathon.  It's an adaptation of a Heinlein story that stays pretty close to the source (it's like the opposite of all those P.K. Dick movies that take one idea and build an action movie out of it).  The Spierig brothers of Undead & Daybreakers fame do good work, getting a nice performance out of Ethan Hawke and a great discovery in Sarah Snook.

Real - An "entering the mind of a coma patient" entry from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whom you can tell normally does horror, but has a little fun in 1970s sci-fi territory with added dinosaur.

Realiti - A very different movie from the New Zealanders who made Black Sheep, it's an okay "what you know is wrong" story.  Not really bad, but doesn't have a cool enough idea to make an impression after so many others.

The Reconstruction of William Zero - Can't fully describe this without giving some good stuff away, but it's a pretty fantastic low-budget about an amnesiac who has to re-learn everything from his twin brother using cutting-edge technology.  One of my favorites at Fantasia.

Time Lapse - A highly-recommended time-loop movie about a trio of friends and lovers who discover that the inventor across the way has built a camera that shoots pictures from 24 hours in the future and pointed it at their window.  Hijinks and extremely tight plotting ensue.

Wyrmwood - An Aussie zombie movie that throws "it is more miserable to be alive than dead now" aside pretty quickly for zombie-powered rocket cars and telepathy.  Funny and fast-paced, with some Mad Max in its DNA.

The Zero Theorem - Best thing Terry Gilliam has done in a long, long time; great-looking, good performances by Waltz, Damon, Thierry, and more, and deserving much more visibility on the big screen than it has received.

Zombeavers - Exactly the movie you'd want from the name "Zombeavers", with a good-looking young cast that also has a strong personality, a tongue firmly in cheek, and puppets.  For those who say I don't like "fun" movies, I offer this one which is a lot of fun because even the obvious puppets are well-used rather than a way for the audience to feel superior.

Geez I'd forgotten about Zero Theorem, looks like it's not going to get a theatrical release, love to see it at SF40.

I got a theatrical release and got mediocre to rotten reviews. We can do better.

Would love to see Predestination.
Have never seen a decent rendering of a Heinlein story even though at least a dozen have been filmed. Don't hold it against this one that they've added , "Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal who has eluded him throughout time." (Wikipedia). Not an element of "All you Zombies", the base story, but translation from one media to another requires changes.

Note. One of my few  claims to science fiction fame is that when I met RAH at a book signing more than 50 years ago, and after I gushed about all of the stories of his (& his peers) that I loved, he complimented me mightily by saying that "You kids are the future.", signing my book (& then turning to the next person in line.)

To be honest, the pursuit of the bomber is a pretty minor part of the movie; I half-think the filmmakers put it in so that they could put an explosion in the trailer.  It's been a while since I've read "All You Zombies", but for a story that isn't inherently cinematic, this seems really close while still also being a fairly good movie.

Post by L.A. Connection on Nov 8th, 2014 at 1:24am
For one of the obligatory 2014 film slots - SNOWPIERCER!

A. It's quite good
B. Bong's THE HOST went over well with the Marathon crowd
C. Most casual moviegoers, including a healthy percentage of Marathoners haven't seen it. And, certainly, few saw it on the big screen (if there even was a big screen option available where you lived since the distributor fuc#ed the release up royally)

once again i will ask knowing that it will fall on deaf ears for "the book of eli". it's a well done post apocalyptic action packed kung fu, gun fu, sword fu, sup prize ending, cameo that will bring the house down. it is not an overbearingly religious movie.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing it since it's one of those marginal titles I've never seen. Not sure if there's any great rationale for showing it other than the "don't let it fall into the Black Hole" one.

Man Who Fell To Earth? Yeah, certainly overdue for a showing.
Ed Wood? Perfect oddball entry for the marathon crowd.

Still say the one film LOOOOOONG overdue is the original Creature From The Black Lagoon.

Kirok is right.

Whew.....wow.....never thought I'd write those words.  ;)

But seriously, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is a genuine counterculture classic, with Bowie's best screen turn, a wonderfully sleazy (yet still sympathetic) Rip Torn, and the chronically underrated Candy Clark.  Only mark against it is the running time; putting it in a lineup that already has three films that are 2+ hours makes things really tight.

Waitaminit.....I just realized that MOONRAKER is 126 minutes.  MOONRAKER?  MOONRAKER?!?!?  With 2001 and SNOWPIERCER now in the lineup, devoting such a large chunk of the schedule to MOONRAKER is pretty excessive.

One of my key requests is a repeat showing of the animated feature that wowed the marathon audience.  Yes, I mean Iron Giant.  A terrific movie about a boy and his robot set in the 50's.  Soooperman!

Here's a somewhat whimsical idea: The 1986 version of Little Shop of Horrors.

The musical version is more explicitly science fiction than the original, it's never played the 'thon, and if we could get the new director's cut version with the original ending, I think that finale would kill on the big screen.

At sf 26 they ran "Bride of Frankenstein"...
At sf 24 they ran "Young Frankenstein"...

Agreed, we need more Marathon Hookers!

And, yes, I started suggesting FRANKENHOOKER since about a year after it was released.

And, then there is this, in which you will see a young L.A. Connection if you look closely during the opening bar scene!

And, yes that is Leatherface himself, Gunnar Hansen, sandwiched in between Scream Queens Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer! I was in charge of the Chainsaws.

Waaaaaay back in October 1990, Columbus's own Patty Mullen was the Guest of Honor at the 3rd edition of the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DREXEL 24-Hour Horror Marathon.  Her homecoming sold out the joint.

And yes, FRANKENHOOKER is a bucketload of offensive fun and would be great to see again. (Cue Metaluna tossing daggers my way.)

Youtube also has other interviews with her at various horror fests around the country. By the looks of them, she has been doing a good number of such conventions and is a natural at the Q and A sessions. Could this mean that a print is available?

Facebook tells us that Iron Giant is confirmed.  Terrific.......... Aside for our beloved Duck Dodgers it is one of the few animated films to play the thon that grabbed the audience and refused to let them go. It is long overdue for a second viewing and a most worthy entry.  A boy and his alien robot friend.  50's SF themes, 50's references, paranoia, beatniks, laughs, tears with more than a passing nod to the most famous alien in SF "Sooperman".  Top shelf.

I always say about Iron Giant's first run, greatest reaction of any marathon film, EVER.
After the Superman line, silence from a stunned audience, the only sound was the sniffing as we fought back tears.
This was before it had been discovered on video so many were seeing it for the first time.

Just added, this years overlooked classic "Edge Of Tomorrow" I still wonder why this was not a bigger hit.

The guest for SF40.  A titan of sf film. Douglas Trumbull will be the guest.  Perfect for 2001.  The master's fingerprints are all over this event of ours.  SFX creds: 2001, Bladerunner, CE3K, Star Trek, Silent Running, Andromeda Strain.  Directing credits: Silent Running and Brainstorm.  This is going to be quite a celebration.

The great Rod Taylor has just passed away.  The Time Machine for SF40?  It has been ten years (it was last seen at SF30).

One of my all-time favorite actors has passed. Rod Taylor RIP at 84. He was such a part of my childhood movie watching. As a kid, I watched him countless times at the Time Traveler H.G. Wells in The Time Machine. The Time Machine along with Forbidden Planet were the two movies most responsible for my love of science fiction. He was also in one of my favorite low budget science fiction films World Without End (basically a spin on The Time Machine). Aside from playing the Time Traveler, I watched Taylor as Mitch Brenner in The Birds many, many times. One of my favorite thriller/horror films of my childhood. Of course, there followed many films including, The Liquidator, Fate is the Hunter, Hotel, Sunday in New York, 36 Hours, Young Cassidy, Dark of the Sun, etc. However, I will always remember him as The Time Traveler and Mitch Brenner

Rod's is one of the iconic roles in the genre. There's a nice behind the scenes extra on the DVD from about a decade ago.
