Title: Ohio 2013 Marathon - 100% Digital
Post by L.A. Connection on Mar 13th, 2013 at 1:23pm
Classic Good News - Bad News scenario.

Good News: Ohio finally announces the dates for their Marathon - May 4-5th.

Bad News: There will be NO 35mm film at the marathon. None. Zero. Zilch. Not a Frame. There goes Bruce's 30 year+ collection of cool trailers, shorts and surprises.

Here are the details: http://www.scifimarathon.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1569

Title: 1st 6 films: Ohio 2013 Marathon - 100% Digital
Post by L.A. Connection on Mar 29th, 2013 at 1:48pm
Ohio has announced it's initial slate of films:

2001
INCEPTION
MOLE PEOPLE
MONOLITH MONSTERS
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED
THE FLY (1986)

Not a bad list so far. Of course, seeing 2001 in crappy digital kind of sucks (and it will be in 2K when a 4K edition was released just last year). Kind of surprised that INCEPTION is creeping into the black hole of recent films that don't get shown at our Marathon right away. Not sure about MOLE PEOPLE and MONOLITH MONSTERS in the same year - one 50s middling Univesal flick should suffice.

And has now added:
THE TIME OF THE ROBOTS (2012) Director: Erik Hammen &
DANGER 5 (2012) Directed by Dario Russo.
Both Midwest premiers.

Pretty final-looking line-up for Ohio's SF Marathon:

Inception
Safety not guranteed
Zardoz
2001
Danger 5
Mega Monster Battle
Wild Wild Planet
Vanishing Waves
The Monolith Monsters
"Surprise Film"

Note: Previously announced Cronenberg's The Fly
and Mole People have been dropped.
Although SAFTETY NOT GUARANTEED has been carried over to Ohio, surprisingly, this year's Premiere hit Motivational Growth, has not.

Seems that Zardoz has also gone away, although this was announced based on a single stray communication. It has nor been verified on either the theatre or Columbus Marathon websites.
Even with contests, a Zardoz replacement & shorts etc, doesn't 11 films seem a little brief for 24 hours???

I like seeing how Bruce runs the lineup. Starting and ending big (in this case with Kubrick), spacing out a serial, and including several Midwest premiers.

We recently saw a restored color version of "Dr. Cyclops" on TCM and it looked great. Don't let the 03:00 timeslot fool you into thinking that this is anything but a first rate fit in the lineup.

Meanwhile in Asia, production is underway on

SPACE MILKSHAKE II: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN!

;) ;) ;)

I dunno. 2001 to kick things off? Sounds like an open invitation for the wide awake yahoos to snark. Bruce has done the bookending thing before, but 2001 is a tough 'front cover' to work with.

The lineup there has gone through a lot of announcements and then cancellations. ZARDOZ and Cronenberg's THE FLY amongst the victims. DR.CYCLOPS played Boston during the single digit years at the Welles - would love to see it back. Can't say it's a stellar lineup on paper, but I hope the folks there have a great time.

Dr. Cyclops and Monolith Monsters..... both good choices.    The 2001 kick off does not seem to be a big deal.  Does Ohio have a lot of snarking during classic films?

Came here to post the final Columbus list, but LA beat me to it.
I'll be at the Drexel in Columbus  tomorrow. Anyone else???

Biggest issue on the Columbus board lately has been the seeming disarray in the planning.  Who's in charge?
Final outcome seems to be a fair list. Hopefully the all digital will look okay.

Ah, Tony D. with the reference from 2008! 'Cause, you know, that one year encapsulates everything right?

But seriously, across the history of the Columbus Marathons, classics and otherwise good films have usually been treated with a modicum of respect.  And the last few years have featured much less snarking than occurred in the 2008 version of the event.

Hey, I searched "snark" on the O.board and that was the first thread that seemed to fit the bill. There is also a 2013 thread more recently, not to mention posts after every marathon b!tching and moaning about snarks including threads of bodily harm.

But, hey, have a good time today folks.
