Title: marathon dreams
Post by kirok on Nov 21st, 2012 at 10:44am
i had my annual marathon nightmare last night. i was not late. i walked in just in time for the first show. the movie was a halfway decent one but it had played the year before. i noticed i was watching t.v. monitor on the side. there was a center screen but it was a 72 inch flat panel and it was mounted too low. the movie ended and garen beagan to make a speech. he started rambling and flocks of people started to walk out. eventually i found myself in the lobby and i realized i had forgotten my ticket. i said to myself "i'm already in but i can't leave and comeback. if i get caught i'm in big trouble". Frank urbano was still handing out prizes and i wanted to get my manila envelope. i started to move towards his station from behind. i saw the pile of envelopes and i almost grabbed one. at the last minute i decided not to. i went to hang up my coat somewhere and some goofy guy with black hair and glasses asked me if i had seen the inexpensive solar energy kit being sold in a nearby store. i only thought to myself that i could not leave the theater. for the second show garen started a running commentary which at times seemed unrelated to the movie. some one stood up and walked in front of the projector. garen said "damn it" and talked a little more. i then woke up and found that i had not set the sleep timer on my radio. it was on all night.

Fear not Bernie.  I will make sure that I save a kit for you.  AT least, ou won't have that to contend with should dreams materialize.

Yeah, but the 'Twilight Zone' moment will come when Kirok opens Frank's gift envelope to find ---

"the inexpensive solar energy kit being sold in a nearby store. "

Title: Grab bag lineup for SF/42: marathon dreams
Post by L.A. Connection on Jul 31st, 2016 at 9:48am
I had a dream last night that Garen was convinced to put the titles of the movies in next year's lineup on pieces of paper - one movie per piece of paper. The dozen or so pieces of paper would be place in a bag. The bag gets shaken, not stirred.

Then, some random Marathoner would reach into the bag right before the first movie would be scheduled to start. Whatever movie was on that piece of paper would then play first at the 'thon. The process would be repeated before each and every movie with another random marathoner reaching into the bag and pulling out the title of the next movie to play.

So, going in, everybody would know the titles of all dozen or so movies that would be playing - but, have no idea of what order! Totally random.

The 'dream' has some appeal. Kind of would shake things up. And, there is a sort of a precedent, too. At SF/10 Bruce Bartoo had the idea of an "all surprise" marathon. NO movies were announced in advance. Nobody knew what movie was playing until it hit the screen. The experiment lasted until the evening hours. The audience rebelled at the notion that they couldn't schedule their meal breaks nor their sleep naps (wimps). Bruce relented and eventually wrote down the remaining schedule on a board in the lobby.

Should this 'dream' become reality?
