Title: TRAILERS, Previews, Coming Attractions etc.
Post by L.A. Connection on Oct 5th, 2012 at 1:56pm
I got a confirmation from the distributor that the 35mm print for TRAILER WAR is edited together as a SINGLE movie - not 35 separate trailers. Like I noted, it may not work for the SF Marathon. But, if we bring back the good old Schlock Around The Clock 'thon - it would be perfect!

Still, I can't personally wait to see it. I've already alerted the two theaters in L.A. that would most likely run it.

But, let's post TRAILERS for movies, both, Old and New here. Or, can be for something coming soon.

Here are ones from all three of those categories:

Classic: THE WORLD THE FLESH & THE DEVIL (unbelievably never shown at the Marathon!):

New: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN (my fave current release; the subject will be profiled on 60 Minutes this Sunday):

Upcoming: TRAILER WAR!

     Sigh.
Do you actually read what you write?
If the show is "35 separate trailers" "edited together" & not a PRINT made from those trailers (which would look horrible, BTW), then someone (aka: ME) is going to have to check all those splices, and the aspect ratios, and the sound formats, and the condition of all those trailers so that someone else (aka: YOU) will see a smooth show.
And thats a lot of work to do on top of all the other juggling I perform that night.
     Kapeesh?
Plus, it will bore people to tears.  Ninety minutes of trailers?  Youd have to be a masochist.  People walk out now when we're running seventeen minutes' worth of trailers!
     WTFU.

Given that Drafthouse is distributing it and they've been putting trailer compilations of this sort together for a long time, I'm reasonably sure that it will be distributed as a single platter-ready print.  They're not a dumb group, and I think a little pragmatism on their part can be assumed.

Not that I necessarily want to see it.  As much as I've gotten through the entire Fantasia Festival 2012 preview disc (something like three hours of trailers for every one of the 100+ films screening at the festival), I've got a pretty low tolerance for camp, which is almost certainly where "Trailer War" will go.

I have to say that trailer does not do the story justice. Walken and Spacek's couple trapped in a cultural time capsule 1962 are a hoot. I've seen it more than once and think it would be a good fit for the 'thon. :)

Post by L.A. Connection on Oct 9th, 2012 at 1:33pm
Another, NEVER PLAYED THE MARATHON sci-fi flick - THE GAMMA PEOPLE!

This is one of the more oddball SF films of all time. It's kind of a cross between VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, Orwell's 1984 and THE MOUSE THAT ROARED. Yes, it's that weird.

I tried to locate a print of this years ago, but, who knows nowadays. Turner Classic Movies has begun to show this the last couple of years.

Never played the Marathon.

We've looked for decades to find a print. Of course, there's always DVD.

It's been called "Andy Warhol's favorite film". The source seems to be this Village Voice article on the movie: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=GedLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=LIwDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4472%2C3347507

As I recall, John Larroquette and Christopler Lloyd rocked their roles as Klingons in that one. Still, I count myself among those with a preference for II (Kahn), IV (Save the Whale) and VI (Christopher Plummer's Shakespeare spouting Klingon), which were all penned by Nicholas Meyer. Meyer, who also gave us 'thon standouts "Time After Time" and "Invasion of the Bee Girls" even directed #6. ;)

Speaking of the Trek franchise: The next installment is still clouded in secrecy, but it does, as last, have a title.

ps. The Khan rumor has been squelched. The latest rumor is Cumberbatch may be playing Gary Mitchell.

I pretty much go with the common wisdom that the better original cast TREK films are the even numbered ones - II, IV & VI

We showed IV, so on to more Red Shirts er....Jackets, not to mention God and the Shat in the director's chair in the odd numbered STAR TREK V.

Seems unlikely; the Star Trek comic from IDW has shown how "Where No Man Has Gone Before" plays out in the new timeline, and between screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci is overseeing the series and IDW being pretty good about working on these things, I'm inclined to think anything that's shown up there is off the table.

The grand-daddy of commercially available Trailer Compilations back in the VHS videotape days, MAD RON'S PREVUEWS FROM HELL got released on DVD for the first time a year or so ago. Rather that do a full restoration of the best available versions of the trailers, it retained all the fuzzy glory of video-cassettes,

Some great trailers but you have to put up with some bad comedy from the zombie dummy in it.
I remember a local VHS trailer collection, wish i could remember the name but it featured the ultimate grindhouse title on it "Curse of a Teenage Nazi"
I actually picked up the film itself from Sinister Cinema a year or so ago but have yet to watch it.

Subversive acts of espionage and sabotage threaten to derail the peace process unless the Enterprise crew can uncover the secret plot and who'se behind it.

Post by L.A. Connection on Oct 17th, 2012 at 4:43pm
Anyone remember the first XTRO? Shown at SF/19. It started off oddly enough as a rip-off of E.T., and then, crossed with ALIEN, became associated with the infamous 'Video Nasties' in England (it was re-cut and never actually made the list, though it was often seized by cops). It wasn't all too extreme, although quite R-Rated. The original actually just played L.A. in 35mm.

We have NOT shown the sequel (probably for good reason). Incidentally, I worked with all three of these lead actors:

disjointed and boring.
star trek V: a brief hilarious camping trip with kirk, spock and mcoy is interrupted by an emergency precipitated by spock's heretical mind altering half brother sybok. apon encountering sybok the crew is won over by sybok and kirk capitulates and the enterprise travels to the center of the galaxy to encounter an omnipotent being that sybok believes to be God. a klingon scout ship with a captain who is manipulated by his female navigator also provides comic relief.

that was so classic. the spacesuits were long underwear. they found a russian cosmonaut and thawed him out. the rocket exhausts were propane torches. the acting was bad.

Oh, it's pretty bad. As many have noted MISSION MARS is a film that was a good 10 years past it's 50s B Movie era. Imagine going to see MISSION MARS right after seeing 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY?????????

One of the more disappointing SF films of the 00's - Brian DePalma's MISSION TO MARS. There's a pretty good reason it didn't show, even when it could have gotten one of the "Films from the Previous Year" slots: It stinks!

DePalma, like John Carpenter, is one of those directors who started off brightly, but really fell off the map artistically. How could DePalma have a sequence where we see astronauts get fried alive in space and then THE VERY NEXT SCENE are the surviving crew dancing and floating weightlessly as they rock out to "Jump" by Van Halen??! "Hey, our friends just got roasted. Let's Dance!!" Real sensitive there, Brian!

I think Major Tom has some 'splaining to do. MARS has been the focus of a bunch of pretty big bombs over the years, including........

GHOSTS OF MARS!

Like his colleague, Brian DePalma, John Carpenter really seems to have fallen off to the wayside.

Title: PHASE IV: TRAILERS, Previews, Coming Attractions e
Post by L.A. Connection on Jan 6th, 2013 at 1:03pm
It's being strongly hinted on Facebook that PHASE IV may be making a return visit to the Marathon (it showed at 1984's SF/9). Interest has been renewed in the film since an alternate ending was discovered this year. Hopefully, that print will be available to us.

During the meanwhile, feast on this bizarre trailer. The film was directed by Saul Bass who is most famous as an opening credits designer for many Bond films, Hitchcock movies etc. As you'd expect, PHASE IV is pretty visually stunning for a rather low budget flick:

Now, THIS is one wild trailer! Watched the TRAILER WAR DVD over the past week or so. This is the closer, and what a closer. It's a Hong Kong crime action thriller crossed with a mystical horror tale - THUNDER COPS:
