Title: Herbert Lom RIP
Post by Frank on Sep 27th, 2012 at 11:19am
The great actor Herbert Lom died at the ripe old age of 95. This classy and extremely talented actor raised any film in which he appeared. Many will remember him a Inspector Clouseau's boss Chief Inspector Dreyfus. However, he appeared in so many wonderful films including The Ladykillers, Spartacus, El Cid, The Frightened City, Phantom of the Opera, Mysterious Island. RIP sir and thank you for the many hours of entertainment.

Mysterious Island (1961 featured in this month's quiz)

I Aim at the Stars (Biopic of rocket scientist Wherner vonBraun)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969)

There's also a sci-fi weapon element in "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" but I don't know if that dog has any bite -RF ;)

Lom was always a reliable character actor. Just a week or two ago, I caught him in one his earliest major roles in the Noir classic NIGHT AND THE CITY.

At the Marathon, Lom has been seen in FAR SIDE OF THE SUN (SF/2) and a couple of times as Captain Nemo in the superior Harryhausen version of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (SF/4 & 25).

His horror films include the Hammer remake of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, ASYLUM and the notorious MARK OF THE DEVIL (a much more serious film than it's reputation). I'd also add the horror tweener SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN in his list of SF films (there is a 35mm print, too!).

My British stepmother, who acted and sang under the name Julia Shelley, had the juvenile lead (TupTim) in the London, West End production of the King & I.
Lom had the lead, King of Siam role (played by Yul Brynner in the film) So Herbert beat my mom for most of the 926) performances.
During the run, the female lead, Valerie Hobson (who played Baroness Frankenstein in the Bride of Frankenstein,) was being courted by a British politician who she later married, John Profumo.
A later sex scandal about his affair with the mistress (Christine Keeler) of a Russian diplomat was greatly responsible for the fall of the British MacMillan administration.

That's a very famous story in the UK. It was made into a movie: "Scandal" (1989) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098260/plotsummary
There was also a fictionalized version prior to that, but I can't recall the name.

When the records of the former Soviet Union were released, Christine Keeler, Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs all turned out to be spies!

Not really anything much more to say. My mom stayed friends with Hobson. She said to me that she never saw what Hobson saw in the really colorless Profumo. This coming from a minor British stage star who marries a very quiet American engineer ( dad).
Profumo redeemed himself. He scrubbed toilets for a charity until they dragged him out of the loo to do things of greater use. Years of charity work resulted in his rehabilitation and even receiving British honors.
Wish American politicos who blow it had as much humility.

Unfortunately, this story is not only being reenacted at the Pentagon right now, it's also soon to be an Andrew Lloyd Webber Play. :o
