How about a new contest to replace the old Alien Mating Cry?

What about EASTWOODING!

How about a tribute to Neil Armstrong with some trip to the moon movies. On September 12 it will be 50 years from President Kennedy's "We will go to the Moon" speech at Rice University.

Isn't there a scene in the 1933 Invisible Man where Claude Rains' voice has a fireside conversation with his antagonist?

Your Eastwooding idea has merrit. I wonder if there are any Facebook followers who are capable of a long-winded, incoherent political rant? ;)

I like it. SOME tribute of some kind is in order.

I vote yea! Too bad that "Moon" and "The Dish" ran recently.

-Rocketship X-M (1950)
-First Men in the Moon (1964) was remade by the BBC (2010)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1535107/
-Capricorn I (1977)

The latter inspired an alarming number* of conspiricy theorists that think that Neil and Buzz were in a "Trip to the Moon Movie".  ;)
-

Meanwhile, on the "Curiosity" set... ;)
-

*In this instance, even one is an alarming number.

RE:  "Moon" theme - please note note in "Iron Sky" thread eleswhere on this site.

And there's that 1922 silent German epic out there somewhere - "Woman on the Moon" or something - that turns out to be interesting, bizarre and a bit prescient, after all.  (All its spaceship graphics look just like the ones we were fed by Disney in the 1950s, but 30 years earlier.)

Yes, I recommend "Die Frau im Mond" (Woman in the Moon, By Rocket to the Moon) having seen it on Netflix a year ago. It's visually beautiful having been directed by "Metropolis" director Fritz Lang.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019901/

It even features the tall german actor Fritz Rasp, who played the spy in "Metropolis".
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003248/

One thing to look for is the launch countdown sequence, which Lang added to produce dramatic tension. Years later real rocket scientists would use it.

I'm kinda thinking the Armstrong tribute is the way to go.
SF38 A giant leap for marathoidkind.

Throw in some moon films (Apollo 18, Lunopolis, Iron Sky) maybe some astronaut related films like Capricorn One Destination Moon, Right Stuff and we have a good theme set

I doubt we will wrap the Marathon theme around Neil Armstrong and the Moon - not, that I wouldn't be for it.

By the way, has anybody ever bought one of the Spacecraft Films DVD sets?

http://www.spacecraftfilms.com/

They are INSANELY detailed. I watched part of the Apollo 11 set in honor of Armstrong. Talk about overload! Just about every scrap of film and tape related to the mission are on the 3 discs.

and! 3+8 = 11 (apollo 11) which by itself is not very amazing. but when you consider that 11 is the fifth prime number and apollo 11 was the fifth flight mission of the apollo program then you must pause and absorb the impact that this has apon a theme choice.

Any ideas for SF films released in 2012 that are worthy of the obligatory slot or two?

PROMETHEUS was interesting if not wholly successful. HUNGER GAMES was just OK - maybe, if we paired it with a more classic 'Human Sport' film like 10TH VICTIM or DEATHRACE 2000 it might work as an old vs. new double feature.

by all means yes, do show prometheus at the marathon. it's significant. there hasn't been a big budget turkey like that since the mark wahlberg planet of the apes remake.

I mentioned that Mrs F and I liked Paranorman in a review post. It might work in a Monster House kind of way.

Cabin in the Woods was also a lot of fun. One plot twist, that I will not reveal, kind of qualifies it but I will not argue with those who say its really a Horror Film parody.

Splice from two years ago is clearly science fiction and might be a good fit. It was no blockbuster but I liked the performances by Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and an unrecognizable Delphine Cheneac.

Images of Mars are all the rage right now:

I'm a fan of Burroughs' book and, while I haven't seen the film, many who have say John Carter didn't deserve the premature burial that Disney gave him. ;)

I thought MONSTER HOUSE was an ok film, but a rotten Marathon selection. Monster louse, more like it.

CABIN IN THE WOODS sucked as both parody and horror. Not to mention as a film.

SPLICE was on the consideration list last year so you never know.

i saw hitchcock's "the birds" last night at a special one night showing. it was the 50th anniversary remastered version. very nice and the movie holds up well. i think it would be a great marathon experience and tribute.

That was a digital presentation, & if that were attempted here I would scream bloody murder until an actual print was procured.  The original negative is intact, so no "remastering" was necessary: it's just the typical con job to get people who dont know anything into the theatre.
I would also argue about that turgid mess "holding up well."  Tippi "holds up well"?  Since when?  The woman couldnt act her way through a sleeping commercial, even if she were tranquilized.

Have to confess, THE BIRDS is perhaps my least fave of Hitchcock's "major films".  But, yes, a 35MM print would be preferable to a digital makeover. And, 35MM prints have played in L.A. and other locations recently (including Today!).

BIRDEMIC might be fun, but the So-Bad-It's-Good type films have not done well at the Marathon recently. Plus, BIRDEMIC is a recent flick and you're getting into iffy Blamire territory there.

Forgot to mention this year's ROBOT & FRANK with Frank Langella. It's a softish SF tale which could have been a segment of the anthology ROBOT STORIES (which played at the Dedham at SF/29). Nothing great, but, like ROBOT STORIES might hit the spot for certain Marathoners.

It's still playing in theaters.

Let's face it guys, if we want to get some more activity on the board here we have got to let people know it's here. That means putting the address on Facebook, Twitter etc.
I mean when the early bird tickets went on sale there was an announcement on Facebook WITH NO LINK!
Seriously.
And yes I do know what might happen if the address does get out there on those sites.

I think the idea is that it will be edited together as a single MOVIE. You wouldn't project each individual trailer.

It's too bad that the film looks like it focuses on obscure grindhouse titles that only Quentin Tarrantino could love.  As a drive-in projectionist, I saw a lot of films during the 70's but not one of those looked familiar. If the focus were more on science-fiction or even horror, it would be a beter fit.

The article goes on to mention that the Trailer Wars DVD features an interview with Joe Dante, creator of, among many other things,  "Trailers From Hell".

http://www.youtube.com/user/trailersfromhell?feature=results_main

That site rocks. What I particularly like is the organization of films into playlists by director or genre.

Looking for William Castle?
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL899C10B1CFEAECB7

Looking for Bugs?
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3A0580CB8E77217E&feature=plcp

Not only are there cheesy trailers for bad movies, there are also surprisingly corny trailers for movies that are actually good! You would never guess by the trailer that "Sid and Nancy" or "Rosemary's Baby" were quality films.

Looking for "Schlock"? You've come to the right place!

Director John Landis on "Schlock"

We all ready have trailers like that, remember?  They come from Bruce, every year.  And whom do you suppose goes through every one of those reels & writes down the titles & sound formats for every trailer so you can see & hear them correctly?  I'll give you one guess.
I tell you, you do your job as a projectionist well, & no one is aware of your existence.

I think the point here is that this is a compilation MOVIE. Feature film. Single unit. The various clips are edited together like the Who's KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, or the horror scenes in TERROR IN THE AISLES, or the Musical bits in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT.

You don't splice up each and every clip. It's already done by Drafthouse Releasing.

Goddammit, Tony, Ive run trailer compilation shows before & theyre certain death!  Have you ever sat through one?  It's okay for the first 20 minutes or so (average trailer length is 2 to 3 minutes), but after that, you start to lose your mind & wonder if the damn thing will ever end.  (How much longer is this going to run?  Will it never end?  Lemme outta here!!!)

You're right a good tribute.

Actually since it was shot locally it's really too bad we can't show that entire film.

Haven't been back here much since the Fantasia Festival in Montreal (this post on my blog serves as sort of a master index of everything I saw), but did see a smattering of foreign/indie stuff that might be worth considering:

Ace Attorney:  Takashi Miike's adaptation of the popular Nintendo DS game is one of the most entertaining movies ever made from a video game (and that's from a guy who likes the Resident Evil series).  It's probably too long, but it's just joyously absurd and funny even if you've never heard of Phoenix Wright before.

Alter Egos: An enjoyable superhero comedy that was picked up by Kevin Smith's label, which actually has enough plot to be interesting, rather than just jokes at the expense of comic book (movie) tropes.

Blood-C: The Last Dark:  A vampires-in-the-future movie that's got some nice animated action, but which is pretty much impenetrable if you aren't familiar with the "Blood" multimedia franchise.

Carré Blanc:  I wound up liking this French dystopian future picture, but even though it's pretty short, it requires a fair amount of patience.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below:  The new animated film from Makoto Shinkai, who is absolutely fantastic (if you like sf that's both emotional and based on good science, you owe it to yourself to track down his 20-minute "Voices from a Different Star".  Heck, "Voices" really should be put into the thon sometime).  This one is probably more fantasy than sci-fi, but close enough to the line to be worth including because it's beautiful and exciting and presents some new cool thing every ten minutes.

Doomsday Book: A Korean anthology film that should be hitting DVD/BD in December, but might be worth a slot in the marathon - the middle segment is done by Kim Jee-Woon (who did The Good, the Bad, the Weird and I Saw the Devil and is directing Schwarzeneggar's big comeback film The Last Stand), and the two on either side are highly entertaining end-of-the-world scenarios.

The Fourth Dimension:  A decent anthology film, although the English-language section is pretty silly (though it's nice to see Val Kilmer not taking himself too seriously), but some more sfnal bits in the Russian and Polish thirds.

Grabbers:  A fun & funny monster movie in the vein of Tremors, with blood-sucking monsters from under the sea who can be poisoned with alcohol.  Nice, likable cast, fun use of certain tropes at the end.  I liked it a lot.

Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack: SF/horror anime.  Has sharks climbing out of the ocean on mechanical spider legs, and then gets more f'ed up.

The Human Race:  Should be considered for inclusion in the festival, especially since it wasn't completely finished when screened in Montreal.  It's a solid low-budget sci-fi action flick, with a lead who can kick your butt despite only having the one leg.

Isn't Anyone Alive?:  The apocalypse as dark, absurdist comedy.  Kind of wears out its welcome about halfway through.

Robo-G:  Japanese comedy whose SF elements are pretty light (old man pretends to be robot for wacky reasons).  Charming, though.

Schoolgirl Apocalypse:  Believe it or not, something very far from the exploitation/kitsch it sounds like.  Kind of gets betrayed by its low budget, but I liked it a lot.

The Warped Forest:  Anybody here seen Funky Forest: The First Contact?  This is the stuff from perhaps the most eccentric of that movie's three directors that was too weird for that film (but also much less random and scattershot, in its way).

While no 35mm prints can be said to be readily "available" any longer, there have been film screenings of MATINEE in the last couple of years. Of course, FRANKENSTEIN played the Marathon in February, and just this week it was digital.

Saw both in the early 80s at a Brattle double-3D-bill.  Would like to see it again.  Modern 3D is better, but this would be cool to see again.
Can we get the latest "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in 3D?  Silly script and performances, yes, but 3D is OK just for its own sake sometimes.  We should all see it while it's still viable, and it'd be fun to get to compare 1957 to 2003 (probably have the actual year dates wrong, but my point is relative, not exact). :D

New to the boards so I don't know if any of these suggestions have been brought up for previous years and shot down for various reasons but here are a few ideas:

For the recent film pick, if there's no heavy objection to found footage there's Chronicle, which at least found new things to do with it.

Otherwise, Duncan Jones' Source Code was pretty good as well and I heartily agree with showing John Carter as I really think the opinion is going to turn around on that one eventually and it's a lot of fun.

For some random older suggestions that haven't (as far as I can tell) played at the 'Thon before (although there might be some good reasons):

The Thirteenth Floor
Time Crimes
Demolition Man
Mimic
The Final Countdown
The Fountain
Escape from New York
Natural City

Thanks!

It's a South Korean film, obviously inspired by (some might argue outright ripping off) Blade Runner, about a man's attempts to find a human body to house his beloved android's mind before she expires. Despite the familiarity of the plot it has some interesting twists on the concept and some nice visuals.

It would depend entirely on which type of print it is (more on that in a moment).

Jon wrote on Nov 1st, 2012 at 12:25pm:

As I explained in a now long-gone post that vanished into the electronic ether when this board went belly-up, there are a number of different ways to project 3D on film: single strip with two images, dual projection, & anaglyph.  Anaglyph sucks, & I would fight against showing any film in that miserable process.

Quote:
Modern 3D is better

This is not technically true; in fact, it's so untrue it's exasperating.  Do you have any idea how digital 3D works?  I'll bet not.  If you did, you wouldnt be saying things like that.
Youve probably never seen 3D film properly projected.  It's very easy to screw up, believe me.

Quote:
Can we get the latest "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in 3D?  Silly script and performances, yes, but 3D is OK just for its own sake sometimes.

Currently, the big house in incapable of projecting 3D, either in film or digital.  Because of technical limitations which I'm not going to try to explain here, we will never be able to show digital (or "modern," as he puts it) 3D in the big house.
We might, at some point in the future, be able to set things up to project film 3D, though.  It would be a huge expenditure (we would have to hang a new, separate screen; so we would need a frame, the rigging, & the screen, all of which equals a large outlay of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$), but it could be done.
Dont hold your breath, however.  ;D

How about,Whisperer In The Darkness.
It has a deliberately retro feel. For a fannish movie it's pretty good.
Would also like to see The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey It's one of the few films that I've ever seen which juxtaposes Science Fiction content with the feel for real culture shock. Also fantasy with realism.

NAVIGATOR has been on my list since - oh, about, 2 weeks BEFORE it got released in this country! (saw it at a Film Festival) And, yes, there is a 35mm print.

Director Vincent Ward went on to make WHAT DREAMS MAY COME and he was the original writer/Director on the underrated ALIEN 3.

Checking the list, I see that both La Jetee and 12 Monkeys have played the Thon, the latter as recently as #31. Still, it would be nice to see the two shown together.
Jetee predicted a world wide plague, long before AIDS. And 12 Monkeys took a genuinely scary film and turned it into something rarely seen in our genre, a work that is genuinely contemporary, with a message, but not didactic.

With the many heretofore unshown films out there, I reluctantly agree. Just trying to think of quality films (I seem to have liked 12 Monks a lot more than LA did) -or combinations of films that have something to say about each other.
My really favorite films are so obvious & well known that even I might be bored seeing them again (Young Frank, Time Bandidos, Dr. Strangeglv. etc.)
What about Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel ?
Haven't seen it, but it's supposed to be funny and was pretty well reviewed. One source described it as  Doctor Who meets Shaun of the Dead.

This one's a repeat from last year.
Why not a Marvin Mini Marathon? The original series comprises, I believe;
    Haredevil Hare (1948)
    The Hasty Hare (1951)
Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century (1953)
    Hare-Way to the Stars (1958)
Mad as a Mars Hare (1963)
In the 80s there are also:
    Spaced Out Bunny (1980)-
Duck Dodgers and the Return of the 24½th Century        (1980)-
Given the popularity of Marvin -plus the Mars Rover - it would seem appropriate.

Lesser known and impossible to get is Marvin's 3D appearance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meZDEjhV7rE it was part of a ride at the NYC WB store.

But in agreement with Jon. I would advocate for the newest stuff that has not been at the Thon. You don't have to lard up the schedule with everything new that comes down the pike, as the Cleveland fest does. But the newest, most commented upon, perhaps unseen by attendees flic? Might be nice.

2012 stuff:

* Detention has been showing up on a number of more daring end-of-year lists, and I'd recommend it, having seen it both at a festival and in a regular theater.  It's fast, funny, and while the horror elements were promoted more the sci-fi elements are the most fun.  My only worry is that it is aggressively modern, made for teenagers who process multiple information streams better than us middle-aged folk.

* I liked Cloud Atlas and think it deserved a lot better at the box office, but fully recognize that it is long, weird, and only two of its six threads are science fictional and the whole thing is tied together by vague spiritual transmigration stuff.

* Dredd is a pretty damn great hard-R sci-fi action movie that succeeds in every place the Stallone movie fails.  Kind of slight, but I think it would be fun late-night blood-and-guts and work pretty well in 2D even though it was built for 3D from the ground up.

* DO NOT BOOK BRANDED.  I shouldn't have to say this, but I can totally picture Garen seeing the attempted cleverness and occasionally neat visuals and going for it.  DON'T DO IT!!!

* Robot & Frank is fun.  Slight, but a good AM selection.

* I'll admit it - I liked Battleship.  It is a whole box of dumb, but just so goofily literal at times that it can get past that.

* Did folks here see Chronicle?  Darn good superhero story that shows there's life in the found-footage form yet.  Its flight scenes recapture how new and exhilarating it must be as well as anything since the Donner Superman.

And three English-language films that played festivals this year that would fit right in:

* Manborg is short, pretty funny, and so good at recreating 1980s direct-to-video schlock that the audience might not recognize just how well-executed everything is.

* Grabbers is very funny; a Tremors vibe in an Irish fishing town.  IFC Midnight has it and I'm not sure what their rollout plans are, but it's worth a call.

* John Dies at the End has apparently been tweaked since it played BUFF last year.  I liked it and figure it makes a lot of sense to put it at the end of the program, both for the name and for how extra-trippy it will seem with the sleep deprivation (its on VOD now with a theatrical release at the end of the month; it's also scheduled to play midnights at the Coolidge the first weekend of March).

Thanks, Jay.

CLOUD ATLAS is just too long for the marathon. I admired it's ambition, but, it never quite comes off - and, much of the makeup is downright laughable. I do recommend Marathoners see it, though.

ROBOT & FRANK isn't a bad idea for the 'thon. It's slight, but enjoyable. Like a modern day 'Twilight Zone' episode. I think some of the alzheimer's stuff plays the old screenwriters game of conveniently fitting the narrative more than the reality of the situation, but not bad.

I didn't see CHRONICLE, but I've suggested it for this year's event based on the positive reviews which has even placed it on a few Top 10 films of the year lists. It was one of those 'I want to see it, but never quite got around to it' movies.

MANBORG played our sister Marathon in Ohio last year. It didn't go over that well according to the posts on their messageboard: http://www.scifimarathon.com/phpBB2/search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=manborg

I really agree Dredd would be great for the marathon especially since it was not a success in theaters which means it'd be new to a lot of the crowd. Very violent so late night showing.

Chronicle even though it was a hit would also go over. It's a clever use of the found footage cliche.

A documentary just came out called 'Men In Suits' not sure it's been mentioned, it's a look at the men inside Godzilla, The Creature, Alien, Predator, Robby the Robot and others. You can see the trailer here.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u54NHkkWUY
