Title: Obit of the Day-Notables in the news
Post by L.A. Connection on Jun 19th, 2012 at 1:53pm
SUSAN TYRELL, a cult actress with credits as varied as Andy Warhol's BAD, Bonanza, FAT CITY, SEPTEMBER 30 1955, BIG TOP PEE-WEE and John Waters' CRY BABY, has passed on. Tyrell was in a number of genre related films such as Oingo Boingo's FORBIDDEN ZONE (which I've tried to get booked for years. And, prints are available), DIGITAL MAN and POWDER. She also did voice work on WIZARDS and the odd-ball Marathon flick, WHAT'S UP HIDEOUS SUN DEMON? (SF/15).

Also forgot to note, that Tyrell got an Oscar nomination for FAT CITY, and that she lived with her co-star in FORBIDDEN ZONE for a few years - Herve Villechaize!

Title: Richard Lynch: Obit of the Day-Notables in the new
Post by L.A. Connection on Jun 21st, 2012 at 2:50pm
Character actor RICHARD LYNCH has passed on. Blessed with a face that was born to play villainous roles, Lynch showed up in tons of Horror and SF films to boot. Lynch was on a number of genre related TV shows & Films like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, BUCK ROGERS, STAR TREK:TNG, GOD TOLD ME TO (aka DEMON), TRANCERS II and Rob Zombie's remake of HALLOWEEN.
I got a chance to work briefly with Lynch on, of all things, BAYWATCH! Lynch had a small part as a drug runner (don't ask!). It obviously wasn't at the top of Lynch's list of accomplishments, but, he was a true professional, through and through. And, that's a good epitaph for any actor.

Title: Andy Griffith: Obit of the Day-Notables in the new
Post by L.A. Connection on Jul 11th, 2012 at 2:12pm
Also during my travels, the iconic ANDY GRIFFITH passed away. His genre credits are miniscule (parts in TV series like SALVAGE 1 and BIONIC WOMAN), but his influence on TV and Film were huge. Film fans owe it to themselves to see his A FACE IN THE CROWD. A film so far ahead of its time that it totally flopped on its original release - it probably seemed like SF back in the 50s!

Title: TOM DAVIS: SNL, CONEHEADS - Obit of the Day
Post by L.A. Connection on Jul 19th, 2012 at 9:36pm
TOM DAVIS, one of the long-time writers on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE has passed on at the too young age of 59. Davis was most known as the writing (and performing) partner of Al Franken. Together they were instrumental in creating The Coneheads (including the feature film version which I've long lobbied for). As an actor, Davis had bit parts in TUNNELVISION and the Marathon film, EVOLUTION.

On a personal note, I got to be part of an interview in College with Davis and Franken. It was brief, and there were certain illegal substances involved ( :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X), but, it was fun to be a part of.

R.I.P.

Post by L.A. Connection on Aug 7th, 2012 at 12:17pm
One of the more pleasant tunesmiths on the film scene since the 60s has passed on. MARVIN HAMLISCH won an Oscar for the title song to THE WAY WE WERE, and was nominated several other times for film songs and scores. His genre contributions were limited to stuff like the RETURN OF THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN AND THE BIONIC WOMAN, BANANAS, SPY WHO LOVED ME and the kiddie robot flick DARRYL.
While his reputation was made with lighter far such as ICE CASTLES and 3 MEN AND A BABY his Oscar nominated score to SOPHIE'S CHOICE showed his range. One of his last pieces, the offbeat score to Soderbergh's THE INFORMANT! was a love it or hate it composition, but it was inspired.

Title: MEL STUART - WILLY WONKA: Obit of the Day-
Post by L.A. Connection on Aug 10th, 2012 at 3:42pm
MEL STUART, director of the original WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY has passed on. WILLY WONKA was an anomaly in his career dominated by Documentary work. He also did the musical doc WATTSAX.
He worked on two seminal documentaries on the space program: RACE FOR SPACE and RACE FOR THE MOON. He also had a small hand in the Marathon entry THE HELLSTROM CHRONICLE.
I got to work with Mel on a short-lived ABC series of specials called UNCLAIMED FORTUNES, hosted by Darren McGavin. Mel was a tough taskmaster and he could come down hard on you if you didn't do your best work. I stood up to him and gave as good as I got - and we became best buddies on the set from then on. Mel would stomp around the set and yell at the Cameraman or an actor and then see me. He'd point his finger right at me and just scream like he was going to take my head off, "YOU!!!!" It was his way of calming down and diverting attention from the targets of his anger. We would wink at each other, since we were in on the joke. As much as I truly enjoyed working with Mel, I still find it remarkable that such an irascable character could have directed one of the most famous "kids films" ever!

Thanks, Mel.

Post by L.A. Connection on Aug 15th, 2012 at 2:03pm
HARRY HARRISON, author of the novel MAKE ROOM! MAKE ROOM!, the basis for 2 time marathon film SOYLENT GREEN has passed on. Harrison is also noted for his STAINLESS STEEL RAT and DEATHWORLD book series.

Harrison had mixed feelings of SOYLENT GREEN as this detailed piece from his website makes clear: http://www.iol.ie/~carrollm/hh/soycann.htm

I hear that Robert Pattinson is up for the Chuck Heston role in the remake.  ;)

Title: PHYLLIS DILLER: Obit of the Day-Notables in the ne
Post by L.A. Connection on Aug 20th, 2012 at 3:09pm
A true pioneer in the realm of female comics, PHYLLIS DILLER, has passed on at 95. It may hard to believe now, but for a very very long time, Diller was essentially the ONLY female comic on the scene.

Her genre work was fairly minor, although it did include a memorable episode of Night Gallery ("Pamela's Voice"), Batman and the feature films THE ADDING MACHINE and MAD MONSTER PARTY (voice).

I got the chance to work with Ms.Diller several years ago. Even then, she was elderly and somewhat frail, but it was a joy to work with a legend, and she nothing less than professional.

She will be missed.... :'(

Title: Sylvia Kristel: Obit of the Day-Notables in the ne
Post by L.A. Connection on Oct 18th, 2012 at 12:03pm
SYLVIA KRISTEL, best known for her erotic roles in the EMMANUELLE series has passed on at the too early age of 60. The lovely looking actress ventured a bit from sex roles in films such as CONCORDE-AIRPORT '79 and the Get Smart feature THE NUDE BOMB. Kristel also was the lead in DRACULA'S WIDOW - Directed by our former Marathon Guest, Christopher Coppola (CREATURE OF THE SUNNY SIDE UP TRAILER PARK, SF/30).

Outside of the EMMANUELLE films, Kristel's biggest U.S. hit was probably the pair of popular teen sex hits of the early 80s (remember that mini-genre boom?): PRIVATE LESSONS and PRIVATE SCHOOL.

Kristel appeared most recently in a pair of European productions in 2010.

R.I.P.

Hey, I sure hope one of your 'buds' was old enough to be your "Parent or Legal Guardian"! That was a very R-Rated film!

I saw most of her films on cable back in the day. Mostly on the exclusively L.A. station, Z CHANNEL (Aka The Greatest Cable Channel of All Time).

They used to have a late night package of mostly European films called 'Night Owl Theater'. Sylvia Kristel, Cleo Goldsmith, Laura Antonelli etc. were superstars of the channel. And, not for their acting.......

Director MICHAEL WINNER, who's most famous film was DEATH WISH, has passed on. Winner did a couple more DEATH WISH films as well as several others with Charles Bronson. Earlier, he did a couple of interesting British comedies with Oliver Reed - THE JOKERS and I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT'S 'IS NAME (the latter with Orson Welles).

Winner made a few Horror films as well including 1977's THE SENTINEL. He was 77.

BONNIE FRANKLIN was also, believe it or not, on the original MUNSTERS, and even Directed episodes of the later 90s incarnation (MUNSTERS TODAY).

I got a chance to work with both her "daughters" from One Day At A Time, but never Ms.Franklin herself. I always thought she was a good solid actress.

Post by L.A. Connection on Mar 14th, 2013 at 8:19pm
Sad, but expected. I was shocked when I was in town around Marathon time and picked up a copy of the Phoenix. It looked like a pamphlet! L.A.'s alternative paper, the LA WEEKLY is still going, but, it's part of the larger Village chain. And, maybe the "Escort" and breast implant ads still sell enough in L.A. to keep it going fairly strongly.

I go back to when it started out as B.A.D. - Boston After Dark. And, there was a 1977 film called BETWEEN THE LINES that was based on the paper. It featured Jeff Goldblum and John Heard, and is pretty decent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075744/combined)

MILO O'SHEA, who played Duran Duran (actually Durand Durand) in the two-time Marathon entry BARBARELLA has passed on. O'Shea also appeared in such genre films as Vincent Price's THEATER OF BLOOD and the rarely shown THE ADDING MACHINE.

Outside of BARARELLA, O'Shea is perhaps best known for his appearance in 1968's ROMEO AND JULIET.

Title: DAVID FROST: Obit of the Day-Notables in the news
Post by L.A. Connection on Sep 1st, 2013 at 11:44am
Frost had a very fine career in British Television along with a lot of crossover work here.

It's a little disappointing that his most visible image to the current generation is the one as portrayed in the film FROST/NIXON. The real David Frost was a lot less callow and substantive than portrayed in that movie (and the real Nixon wasn't as warm and fuzzy than Frank Langella).

Frost hosted & did much of the writing for That Was The Week That Was a much more satiric topical affairs comedy show than anything ever shown here.
Lived in England  in High School & can guarantee that it was as funny and a lot more pointed than anything American. The US version, also fronted by Frost was heavily censored.
It's amazing that he was eventually knighted considering the outrage that some of the shows comments about the government & the monarchy caused.
More power to the Pythons for satirizing Frost. He became the sort of icon and powerhouse, perhaps for good reasons, that he originally satirized. Peter Cook once commented that the one thing that he ever regretted was saving Frost from drowning.

Doris Lessing, Nobel Laureate and science fiction author died yesterday.
Lessing was not widely respected for her science fiction  "Canopus in Argos" series but when asked which of her books she considers most important, Lessing chose the sequence.
From Wikipedia,
"These novels present an advanced interstellar society's efforts to accelerate the evolution of other worlds, including Earth. (Similar concepts occur in science fiction by other authors, e.g. the Progressor and Uplift sequences.) Using Sufi concepts, to which Lessing had been introduced in the mid-1960s by her "good friend and teacher" Idries Shah."
(Quote from Ms. Lessing,) What they didn't realize was that in science fiction is some of the best social fiction of our time. I also admire the classic sort of science fiction, like Blood Music, by Greg Bear. He's a great writer." Unlike some authors primarily known for their mainstream work, she has never hesitated to admit that she wrote science fiction and attended the 1987 World Science Fiction Convention as its Writer Guest of Honor."

In their The Lives They Led feature in today's NYT, they noted the death this year of Stuart Freeborn, makeup artist extraordinaire.
Quoting from Wikipedia,
"Freeborn's most famous work is creating the make-up for all of the characters in the Star Wars trilogy, including Chewbacca and Yoda; he based Yoda on his own face and partly on Albert Einstein. He oversaw the design of the original Jabba the Hutt puppet used in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, as well as the creation of the Ewoks.
