Post by Caleb451 on Jan 6th, 2012 at 7:44pm
This is the thread to post your comments for films playing at SF/37 in February 2012. - admin

I read on Facebook that Attack the Block is a confirmed booking for SF37.
Great start!

Is it going to be subtitled? I couldn't understand a word they said in the trailer.

I should not think that we would try to stick it to the guy who has the most to do with our enjoyment of movies over a 24 hour period.  You know.... the whole you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit onto the wind type of thing...  Juust sayin.

my first reaction was 'too phallic'

plus it's got mars and neptune orbitting the planet saturn. neptune is a gas giant comparable in size to saturn. tidal forces would surely merge the 2 atmospheres. the larger northern ice cap of mars is shown in the southern pole. and is that pluto off in the distance? it's not even a planet anymore.

I agree. There really is no place in the science fiction genre for that sort of thing.
I'm sure respected character actors like William Shatner

and Patrick Stewart

would agree. ;)

Okay, RF: you got me.  What I had been drinking went out through my nose when I saw that!
I dont know if it takes...er...those to project the thon all by myself.  I think it has more to do with insanity, idiocy, craziness.  Maybe also stamina, careful planning, love of a challenge....
Actually, to tell the truth, I think it has to do with...well, many years ago, I was head projectionist at the Brattle & the Coolidge simultaneously, when both were running rep, so I was inspecting twenty to twentyseven different movies a week, at abysmal pay.  And I did it because I felt that, hey, if people were going to show up & pay to see these old movies, they should at least be able to see them at their best.  And I guess I figure, if you nuts are willing to sit on your tushes for twentyfour hours to watch these things, the least I can do is make sure you see them the way theyre supposed to be shown.
Watch out if I ever decide to retire again.  As far as I can tell, I'm bringing up the rear...
This one coming up will be number seven for me.
Maybe I should leave a cup out for tips?
     Nah.....

Sol-seems interesting. Lord of the Flies type movie?

Attack the Block- IS AMAZING. I really loved this movie. You will like it.  ::)

DIMENSIONS: Ok I am little skeptical BUT the trailer is giving me the same feeling that Primer gave me. Remember Primer? Primer played at SF 30. It was really good. It was a mind @#$%!

Thats it for now folks!  :D

ATTACK THE BLOCK isn't anywhere near "amazing". But, it's loud and action-packed and will go over well with this crowd.

Also, DIMENSIONS & SOL are Festival selections only at this point. Although, if history is any guide one or more Fest films may show up at the Marathon.

Yes, well, lets hope it isnt as faded as that print of Last Woman on Earth.

I'm sure WAR OF THE SATELLITES is a vintage print. The only 'good' news is that it is in Black & White, so the color issue doesn't come in to play. It's not a bad little film considering it's insanely tight schedule. Decent pacing and its nice to see Dick Miller in a leading role. Susan Cabot was born in Boston, too.

Is it gory violence or non-gory violence?

Also, I was being serious when I said I couldn't understand what they were saying. Did anyone else have that problem? Will I still be able to follow the story?

I loved Susan Cabot.  Here life was even stranger than her
movie roles.  Look it up and read about her life and traguc death at the hands of her own son, who was unbalanced.

IIRC, it's not terribly gory.  Some blood, some monsters getting killed, but not a lot of lingering on corpses or dismemberment.

I'm apparently not the guy to ask about accents, because I have no problem understanding Tom Hardy in the Batman preview, but I don't think Attack the Block presents that much of a problem.  A two minute trailer doesn't give you time to acclimate like a 90-minute movie does.

It's late by recent standards, although by the standards of other festivals, a month out is generally when you start seeing schedules appear (though often in one big press release).

From recent Facebook updates, it seems Garen is still screening films for the festival, and given that the general mix for the marathon has been fairly stable for the past few years, there's probably really not much need to nail down or announce the specific line-up very early - it's not like it's going to be the big factor in whether many buy tickets.

BTW, keep an eye out for Roger Corman.  He was above putting himself into his movie if a scene demanded a crowd.  However, he has a pretty big cameo in War playing a flight engineer and appearing in a few spots throughout.  Also, keep an eye out for the world's oldest teens.

No, this is Chuck Jones's personal print, which he stole from the Disney vaults & then handcoloured with oil paints!  (Disney's ghost is currently being grossed out by Ken Russell's ghost, while the ghosts of Tex Avery, Bill Tytla, & Art Babbitt are whooping it up at Ub Irwecks's place.)  The special print was made out of marble, & is not easy to run without causing damage....

Garen has promised to list a bunch of films by half time.  So far, I see that he has teased with two posters: one for Brainstorm and one for Scanners.  Are they part of the line-up.  Works for me if they are part of the thon.

WAR OF THE SATELLITES (1958) Roger Corman's 8 day wonder starring Boston's own tragic Susan Cabot.
BRAINSTORM (1983) Natalie Wood's last film from sfx wizard Douglas Trumbull.
FRANKENSTEIN (1931) Rare studio archive print of the classic.
MISSION GALACTICA: Cylon Attack (1979) 2nd of the 'Galactica' movies.
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) Archive print of HG Wells' classic.
PAUL (2011) Sci-fi comedy from the folks who gave us 'Shaun of the Dead'.
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011) Stirring re-imaging of the classic.
SCANNERS (1981) David Cronenberg's brain exploding ground breaker.
RE-ANIMATOR (1985) H.P. Lovecraft as channeled by Stuart Gordon.
ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011) One of our faves for this year
COWBOY BE-BOP (2001) Cult hit based on the TV show.
North American Premiere DIMENSIONS (2012) Think what if PBS' Masterpiece Theatre had a sci-fi edge? Part of The Fest.

Plus DUCK DODGERS, BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA, Fest shorts, Trailers guests and more to announced soon.

"Rockin!" Sure I've seen some, but classics like "Frankenstein" and "Island of Lost Souls" are always welcome on the big screen!

I like Cowboy Bebop and Re-Animator so a dinner break will be very tough for me.  Maybe Frankenstein as Fran and I saw this at the Coolidge at Halloween.  But, we shall see.

Not a bad slate, but (and I can't believe, as the Horror Marathon guy, that I'm saying this) it's missing a few standout pure sci-fi classics.  The lack of these draws attention to the three horror-centric titles (four if you want to shoehorn in Scanners, although it's one of the more sf-ish films in the Cronenberg canon.)

The Island of Lost Souls print, which we played at the 2010 Columbus Horrorthon, is absolutely gorgeous.  The print of Frankenstein is less so, but still a powerful visual experience.

I could do without one or two of the more recent titles.  I know that 35mm repertory booking is getting harder, but there are still films out there, both in the studio vaults and in the hands of private collectors.

I really dislike the flat Galactica films (although my four-year-old self was a big fan).  Come to think of it, they're probably some of the few films that I would genuinely have no interest in seeing in a Marathon setting.

Re-Animator holds up as a small scale study in pandemonium.  Have any of you heard of its recent musical incarnation, written by Dennis Paoli and directed by Stuart Gordon?  I had the chance to see it in L.A. last summer; it's tremendously entertaining, both a wry commentary on the film to stage transition and a sometimes dramatically moving production.  High points go to light opera vet Jesse Merlin for his high camp portrayal of Dr. Hill.

Title: Re: SF37 Films Official Reaction thread
Post by Frank on Jan 22nd, 2012 at 9:23pm
I would normally be dead set against three new titles but I acutally have not seen Attack or Paul so it softens the blow and Apes was probably the best of the BIG science fiction films of the year and actually did the series proud.
Scanners is barely a horror film.  It is far more rooted in science fiction.  Island of Lost Souls and Frankenstein are both horror but with at least one foot in science fiction.  They are monsters of science as opposed to Dracula or Wolfman.  Re-Animator it's been some time and I welcome its' inclusion.
Overall, I like the line-up.  The Galactica movie, oh well.

Reactions:
WAR OF THE SATELLITES (1958) - Never saw.
BRAINSTORM (1983) - As I kept saying, a mistake not to wait for the 70 install to finish to run this.  Sometimes I despair.
FRANKENSTEIN (1931) - Probably the print we ran for Hallowe'en.  Looks very good.
MISSION GALACTICA: Cylon Attack (1979) - Really?
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) - Never saw & never ran.
PAUL (2011) - This is okay: dumb fun.  Lots of in-jokes that this crowd will get.
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011) - Didnt see.  Looking forward to it.
SCANNERS (1981) - I hate & despise this piece of stupid crap.
RE-ANIMATOR (1985) - Never saw & never ran.  Heard a lot about it, though.
ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011) - Missed this, too.
COWBOY BE-BOP (2001) - Oh, Christ.
DIMENSIONS (2012) - New.

My quick thoughts -

WAR OF THE SATELLITES - Corman quickie that actually has decent pacing and Dick Miller in a lead role. Not to mention this is an ultra-rare 35mm print

ATTACK THE BLOCK - will go over well with this audience

PAUL - ditto

BRAINSTORM - Really looking forward to it. I haven't revisited the film in many years.

FRANKENSTEIN - A classic. James Whale. Boris Karloff. Just a bit concerned that its slow pace and lack of any musical score will get filled by the sound of yahoos and their wisecracks.

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS - This is livelier and has more creepy elements that I hope will go over better than I fear FRANKENSTEIN may garner. Side notes: 1. This is the film that was playing in Cinema One when I first entered a Marathon for the Night Flight at SF/4 - Boy, did we wanna sneak in! 2. Joe Neff says that the print that played in Ohio was superb; hopefully, it is that same one. The one I saw in L.A. about a decade ago was very good except they used extreme noise reduction to drown out the hiss and it made it sound like the dialogue was recorded in a wind tunnel - I hope this isn't THAT print.

RE-ANIMATOR - I admit that this isn't a fave of mine. Stuart Gordon has been a good friend of the Marathon, and I worked with Barbara Crampton & Jeffrey Combs, so I guess I owe it a 3rd chance....

COWBOY BEBOP
- I'm unfamiliar with this series. I don't mind Anime as much as others seem to.

MISSION GALACTICA - Ok. Some 70s TV schlock, I suppose. Would rather have not shown this in back to back years with the feature.

SCANNERS - Our seemingly annual Cronenberg. Haven't seen this one since about a year after it came out. I first saw it at that now-legendary Cronenberg 4 film mini-marathon that culminated with SCANNERS' local premiere at the Saxon.

RISE OF THE APES - The best SF film overall that I saw last year (though I also quite liked MELANCHOLIA, ANOTHER EARTH & ADJUSTMENT BUREAU). It doesn't have the grandeur and scope of the best of the original APES series, but pretty solid.

DIMENSIONS - Since my schedule doesn't allow me to get to the Festival, I'm glad that this seemingly highly regarded entry will show at the Marathon.

I think I've mentioned this somewhere before, but it bears repeating.  I hate almost every anime I have watched or tried to watch, however I found Cowboy Bebop thoroughly enjoyable when it played in Columbus ten years ago, especially with the marathon crowd.

The only thing on this list that has me scratching my head is that Battlestar Galactica thing, especially since you guys showed the first one last year.  Scanners and Re-Animator are required viewing for any genre fans who have yet to see them, especially in a theater.

And I know the heated debate goes on and on about whether to include recent films in the lineup, but I can't think of three better choices from last year for the marathon.  Have fun, everyone.

Ditto about Cowboy Bebop.  My daughter told me about this series and the movie a number f years ago.  I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop.  I hope that it will be well received.  I am psyched about the rest of the line-up and I can live with the Galactica inclusion.

As always, SOMETHING has to be shown between 2 and 7 am (and, it's always 'the other Marathoner's fave' that you want to be shown then). Which 2 or 3 titles should they be?

please play battlestar galactica at 9 or 10 p.m. so folks can stroll into the small theaters and catch whatever is in current release. with luck it will be tin tin or hugo or red tails. one year at the coolidge we played stargate at midnight while the lineup continued in the main theater.

There are a lot of variables in a lineup and LA does his best to weigh many factors including kid-friendliness, sleep-inducing plot, and general popularity. Add to that any number of surprises, shorts, delays or even a major catastrophy and there's just no making everyone happy.

As far as programming the break music, I'll just have to take it as it comes!
Or, in the words of Battlestar Gallactica costar the late Lloyd Bridges:

"It looks like I picked the wrong week to give up smoking!"

That scenario is not quite true.....
Garen has the final say on the line-up so let's not put it all on Tony.  He has to work within certain parameters set up by the Man himself.

Wow, quite a mass announcements. Interesting bunch too
War of the Satellites- obscure enough that likely most have never seen it. Probably pretty creaky too.
Attack The Block-missed it on its theater run so looking forward to it.
Paul- really liked it and look forward to seeing it again. A good buddy comedy where one buddy is an alien.
Brainstorm- interesting and worth another look.
Frankenstein- first time seeing it on the big screen, should be fun.
Island of Lost Souls- really looking forward to seeing this again. Will we still get the crowd doing Devo chants?
Re-Animator- gross out fun, may miss it depending on the time.
Cowboy Bebop- anime again? That trick never works.
Scanners- I actually had to check if we had shown this before. Cronenbergs always worth seeing.
Rise of the Apes- great film, just not sure if I want to see it again.
Dimensions- no idea yet.

If you are seriously looking for input as to what to show in the middle of the night, my two cents:

Re-Animator: graphically violent and sexually explicit, plus it's usually categorized as a horror movie more so than SF.

Cowboy Bebop: Not a rarity or a premiere and has well paced action throughout.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Of the recent titles, this is the one that has probably been seen by most of the audience.

Oh, and by the way, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is still listed as "Rise of the Apes" in several places on this site.

Here is where the difficulties begin:

I want to see all of those and would like to be awake for most of them.  If you want to put Re-Animator between two other movies in te wee hours that would be fine.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a recent hit and as such, if we go by the past, will probably play first or second rather than last as it is new and has been seen by many.

My quick thoughts -

"And just some of my quick thoughts on your comments."

"I was in Cinema 1 at the Welles, the film was remarkable. You could enjoy it as a classic or go with Charles Laughton & Bela Lugosi chewing up the scenery. Plus the animal men's chant of "Are we not men?" was answered "We are Devo" by the crowd."

MISSION GALACTICA - Ok. Some 70s TV schlock, I suppose. Would rather have not shown this in back to back years with the feature.

"Don't think this version ever played in the US in theaters so is a rarity in its own way."

RISE OF THE APES - The best SF film overall that I saw last year (though I also quite liked MELANCHOLIA, ANOTHER EARTH & ADJUSTMENT BUREAU). It doesn't have the grandeur and scope of the best of the original APES series, but pretty solid.

"May not have the grandeur but it does work as a set up film for the original. You can see the story of the missing astronauts spaceship going on in the background."

Professional, smefessional...we're all just big fanboys and fangirls here.

I think it's fun and informative to see what others think. There are certain formulas and tendencies we fall into when making the schedule, so it doesn't hurt to hear other voices.

My only quibble is when folks insist that their own "most want to see" (or "don't care to see") must be booked at such and such a time, otherwise the whole schedule sucks. Then, there is the whole "dinner break" issue. As I noted last year when we showed one of the most requested and long-elusive titles for the Marathon - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3K - during dinner time: Whole ROWS of people seemed to flock out for a bite to eat. Were they against the idea of seeing MST3K at the Marathon? No! They were hungry, that's all! I'm convinced that even if we were to get Ridley Scott's rough cut of PROMETHEUS or secret footage from Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT and showed it during the loosely defined "dinner hours", there would still be a bunch of hungry marathoners would would choose Redbones over such exclusive footage!  :D

It does hurt a bit because in all of the years that I was not in on what goes on behind the scenes stuff such as this led me to think that I might have an actual voice in the matter.  I know better now.  If you insist on doing this exercise let folks know up front that it is for funsies.   That would be fair.

I hope we never have any LOTR movies at the marathon. I want Aliens not Dwarfs.

I have never seen Paul but my first reaction was it would be a good last movie. Please, please, please no subtitles or overly complex and intricate plots near the end!

IIRC Brainstorm showed late at night the first time it ran and the sort of dreamy quality was a good fit. Re-Animator also seems a natural for late at night.

We have a history of showing the obligatory anime movie in the second slot. This always kinda breaks the mood for me. Let's...uh, hide it somewhere. :P

First, make no mistake, I don;t see any professionals in this group when it comes to setting up the order of movies.

Also, this is how rumors get started.  I hear someone said something about Prometheus..........

LOTR:  I like the fantasy genre but this is science fiction.  I don't mind straying a bit far off the course now and again but let's not wake up in a different country.

Do you see the titles "Prometheus" or "Hobbit" in the posts above?  Do you need a remedial reading class?  Lets review:

Metaluna:  I dont want to see the LOTR [thats The Lord of the Rings, Tony, just in case youre having difficulty following this] movies run at the marathon, because I'd rather see SFish movies with aliens in them.

Tony:  Prometheus!  The Hobbit!  Marina Del Ray!  EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

For the record, I think the LOTR movies suck too.

But back on topic: if we have this great big deal movie we are going to show, why are you planning to show it at dinner time? Lots of people will go out then just because they are hungry. Show it at some other time.

Clarification: Well I for one love the LOTR movies and would welcome them with open arms to any fantasy marathon you care to run.

Tony is either losing his mind or his sense of humor.  Lighten up bro.  I can see now why you invite opinions.  You welcome them with open arms.

For the record, you may have heard of this game called telephone.  You know.... let's say you offhandedly mention Prometheus as an example of a film that people would argue over...... someone reads that and gives part of the info to a friend, that friend then passes off the info to another friend a little less accurately and then by the end of the night we have James Cameron coming to introduce his new movie.

Mostly, however, the comment  was said in jest to break your stones... so lighten the eff up will ya please.

ENDHIRAN is a lot of movie, though - three hours and it takes a while to get started, especially if you're not in a theater filled with Rajinikanth fans.  I mean, I dug it, and the finale is full of completely nuts action.

Also, kind of annoying to see that Garen still hasn't learned to do a quick Google before declaring something a premiere, as I'm pretty darn sure this ran for like a month and a half at Fresh Pond in 2010 (it was big enough for me to see it in a packed house on its third week).

Whoa! 13 movies!! must be a complete list, no?

Seems pretty good over all. not thrilled with everything. too much blck and white. I like the old stuff,b ut three in one lineup? And Cronenberg again? another three - three years in a row of old school Cronenberg - and still no They Came From Within! and talkin' of threes - a 3 hour indian movie? WTF?!!

War of the Satellites is a find, but too bad there aren't any real 50s or 60s classics. Back to back Corman though. And back to back Battlestar Galactica to boot. oh well. I guess Garen just thinks everyboyd wants to see the same stuff over and over

Pumped for Brainstorm! Really liked Apes and Paul is fun. Dimensions sounds like a good time travel movie. Attack should be good. Anime - eh, meal break. ReAnimator is good and nasty - can't wait to see the "head" scene on the big screen again!  :)

3 more weeks to go!

Big difference bewtween those two movies.  Solaris is SLLOOOOWWWWWW.  It's a great film but three hours seem more like 6 with Solaris.....

Ah yes, but the musical numbers in Solaris were not nearly as much fun as a typical Bollywood picture.
Yes if this is a Bollywood pictures let's expect LOTS of weird musical numbers. :D

Ah, yes, the 'head' scene!  :o

I've located a print of THEY CAME FROM WITHIN - Can u say Cronenberg for FOUR YEARS IN A ROW!  ;)

Whoa! 13 movies!! must be a complete list, no?

Four years in a row is fine with me.  They Came From Within is long overdue for an return.  Then get exXstenZ and Dead Zone.   Hard to believe that there was such a visceral reaction to Shivers back in the day.  I mean it's disturbing but to see all those wimps........ er..... marathoids walk out of a movie and spoil it for us in Cinema 2 was low.  Censorship in the People's Republic.  Hard to believe.  Also, a Corman every year is fine with me.

As some of you might know, ENDHIRAN made its SF Marathon bow at the Columbus 'thon last May (on the Saturday that the world was predicted to end!)  I was fairly skeptical of its potential success, for all of the reasons that you guys have mentioned.  But I was pleasantly surprised to see it become, quite possibly, the hit of the event.  It's all sorts of bonkers, but it also keeps building on that sense of nuttiness, especially in its delirious climactic battle(s).  I wouldn't mind seeing it again with a mostly unsuspecting audience.

Please note, I am not one of the skeptics.... I think that it will be a gas.  Of course, the only fly in the ointment is where it falls in the line-up.  I will leave that to LA and Garen.

We shouldn't be 'embarrassed'!

What is your Most want to see film? Least?

My off the top of my head picks:

Most - BRAINSTORM - haven't seen it since the early 80s. Loved it then, I sure hope the naysayers here are wrong....

Least - ATTACK THE BLOCK - Saw it with a great crowd already - not to mention an introduction with the Director and Producer Edgar Wright. It's decent dumb fun, but, don't need to see it a 2nd time

Hmmmm..., Most might be "Dimensions" as I saw the trailer at the megaplex and was interested then. Little did I know I'd see a real premier. It may also be "The Robot Endihran" given the chances that it won't be making my DirectTV package anytime soon.

Least is "Bambi vs. Godzilla", although I remember liking it the first time I saw it at a late night college show in the 80's. Despite the tight editing and good score, this animated favorite dosen't hold up well for second viewing. They never really build suspense or develop characters in the way that earlier and later animated features accomplish.

It is mrs. F's first time seeing this title and her reaction may be more positive.

Most: Enhidron.  The trailer looks great.  I'm getting quivers of anticipatory joy just thinking about it.

Least: Planet of the Apes. Saw it in the theater and saw it again at home a couple of weeks ago.  Really good update of the series and cleanses my palate of the Tim Burton dreck, but I'm not ready to see it a 3rd time in less than a year.

Great News!  At long last they have discovered the 3.25 seconds of the fabled missing footage from Bambi/Godzilla.  The missing footage has been added to the film and the whole shebang has been painstakingly restored.  The new version significantly changes the storyline and more fully develops the character's back story.  The restored ending will simply blow you away.  Let me just say that it involves Flower and Mothra.  It is not to be missed.

i've seen it with directors commentary, animators commentary and the blooper reel (which is hilarious). the director points out much of the symbolism that i had completely missed.

That is what usually sells it for me.....

WAR OF THE SATELLITES..... never saw it on the big screen
ATTACK THE BLOCK...... have not seen
FRANKENSTEIN (1931).....saw it recently on the big screen
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS... not since the Welles
RE-ANIMATOR....... not since it played over 2o years ago
COWBOY BEBOP.......... not on the big screen or in 10 years
BRAINSTORM (1983).......... not since it came out
MISSION GALACTICA: CYLON ATTACK (1982)... not seen
PAUL (2011)... have not seen it
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES....saw it
DIMENSIONS.......... have not seen it.
SCANNERS............. not on the bg screen since it was released and about 10 years otherwise.
ENDHIRAN.... not seen it.

So probably the least movie that I want to see is Frankenstein since I saw it at the Somerville at Halloween.  That's a pretty good line-up....

Okay, I'm gonna take a shot at the complete schedule
Six unseen films, has to be a record for a thon, at least since the video era.

WAR OF THE SATELLITES..... I've never seen it, its bound to be a little creaky. But it stars Dick Miller and Corman managed to throw it together withinh 8 weeks of Sputnik being launched. Now that's exploitation!
ATTACK THE BLOCK...... Another I've not seen, I was expecting this to be a summer cult film but it came & went to theaters almost within a week. Looking forward to it with the thon crowd.
FRANKENSTEIN (1931)..... Never seen it on a big screen and have not seen it in years. If nothing else it'll make me get even more jokes next time I watch Young Frankenstein.
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS... I have not seen it since it's Welles showing. A really great pre-code horror film. WAY over the top in acting. Can't wait to see it again.
RE-ANIMATOR....... Bound to be fun with the marathoid crowd. Haven't seen it since the original release.
COWBOY BEBOP.......... Have not seen it, hopefully it'll run around dinner time.
BRAINSTORM (1983).......... Saw it when it came out and also during it's first  marathon showing. A little corny but still a good 80s sci-fi science film.
MISSION GALACTICA: CYLON ATTACK (1982)... Technically I have not seen the film but I have seen the eps it was taken from. Might be interesting to see how it's put together.
PAUL (2011)... Saw it in theaters and liked it a lot. Looking forward to seeing it again with the marathoids.
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES....Liked it in the theater, but for some reason would not mind missing it here.
DIMENSIONS.......... I've not seen it, not sure about how I feel about seeing it. A lot of the indie films we've gotten in the past have turned out to be interesting.
SCANNERS............. Have not seen it since it's original release. Really curious how it'll stand up.
ENDHIRAN.... Haven't seen it but have wanted to since the trailer became hot online last year.

So for me looks like Endhiran is my must see and Cowboy Bebop my likely miss.

And as to Bambi Meets Godzilla, I'll watch the restored version, but I REFUSE to pay to see it when it's re-released in 3D next year.

Looking back at the schedule I'd say most likely it was a late dinner that caused me to miss it.
It was preceded by Robojox and a talk with Stuart Gordon. Since i had not seen Robojox  and was interested in hearing the guest I'd guess my group decided to take a very late meal.

Okay, now we're getting an indication of the order the films will be run in, time to make some plans.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes- Opening film, well guess I will be watching it again.
Brainstorm- Good placement, no prob with seeing it.
Endhiran- Looking forward to this, I estimate it'll be around 7pm when it ends.
War of the Satellites. Very short, just over an hour and since I have not seen it before.
Dimensions- which will make this my dinner break film. Apologies to the makers of the film. Timing is everything.
Attack the Block- should keep the crowd up.
Island of Lost Souls- worth staying awake for, definitely.
Scanners- missed this on my first posting. Likely the head explosion at the beginning will wake up everyone. After that who knows.
Frankenstein- after midnight? Tough sledding but may be fun.
Re-Animator- may still be awake for this.
Cowboy Bebop- almost 2 hrs long? I sense nap time.
Paul- really want to see this
Mission Galactica- will take it's toll of the survivors, but it is a rare film to see, in this form at least.

One thing I'm curious about - how new is the print of Frankenstein?  It's one of the movies that Universal has supposedly restored and struck new prints of for their 100th anniversary this year, but I suspect that we would have heard some mention of it if we were getting one of the new prints (although DtP may have more to say once the print is actually in his hands this week).

The restorations were just announced, so they probably aren't done yet. It's probably the same print that played at the Somerville around Halloween. Likely the previous restoration that was done about 1999. It looked pretty good then.

I wouldn't be so sure that's actual running order.

I sure hope not, ending with Galactica would be lame.
And what's all this talk about "dinner breaks"? In 31 years I have never left the theater for any reason other than to go home!

That is probably NOT the final schedule.  Garen gets the last word about order and he invariably makes a change or two.

Oh sure make fun of the old marathoid who likes to go out and make sure the real world still exists during the marathon. (not sure why since I am retired now)

Likely its NOT a final schedule, I'm just going on how it's listed currently.

The BAFTA Awards were yesterday in England. ATTACK THE BLOCK did not win for best British newcommer. It went to TYRANNOSAUR for director/actor Paddy Considine. No, it's not a dinosaur pic! THE ARTIST won a bunch of awards, HUGO & HARRY POTTER won one each, and Almodovar's kinky horror film THE SKIN I LIVE IN won the Foreign Language award.

The main site reports that Folklore has been added onto the thon.  Another movie?  Wow!  It would appear that we will be running a bit over 24 hours.  I hope the breaks aren't too tight.....

As for Folklore, who can say?

For any of you who don't want to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes because you just saw it...get your iPods ready...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Riff Trax!

Quote:
For many of us, the last time we uttered the title “Planet of the Apes” was when we were angrily demanding from a teenage usher “I’ll ask you one more time: Are you going to give me a refund for Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, or am I going to have to take another finger?” However, at that time, nobody could have foreseen the Ape Boom of the aught’s. It was spurred on by the box office dominance of a trilogy that made the LOTR movies look like one excruciatingly long version of Carrot Top’s Chairman of the Board: MVP: Most Valuable Primate, MVP 2: Most Vertical Primate, and MXP: Most Xtreme Primate. Fortunately, Tim Burton has resisted to urge to “reimagine” any of these classics, though he has expressed interest in making a worthless version of My Gym Partner’s a Monkey.

Anyways, the Ape Boom® culminated in yet another Planet of the Apes movie that nobody really asked for or cared about. But when the movie came out, it proved what we once overheard our dad saying to our mom on Christmas Eve: “Set their expectations really, really low, then they’ll be delighted when they get a Man-E-Faces toy where two of the faces don’t work. Dammit, we’re out of beer already??”

So, while we kid, Rise of the Planet of the Apes more than delivers on its non-existent expectations, giving audiences what they want: Apes (Yes!), Apes, (Yes!!) and more Apes (Yes!!!!) and James Franco (Wait, what?). Andy Serkis is also along for the ride, playing the role of “Guy who will probably get awarded an honorary Oscar in about thirty years and be really self righteous about it.”

I remember those guys being funnier.  This was almost painful.  Although it was like being at the marathon.  A lot of snarky comments most of which fall flat..... Heard Knock from the son?  Really?

There's a really neat point in the Thon where you realize that you've just watched 6 or 7 movies, and things are only getting started!
